Like many others on the autism spectrum, 20-something stand-up comic Michael McCreary has been told by more than a few well-meaning folks that he doesn't "look" autistic. But, as he's quick to point out in this memoir, autism "looks" different for just about everyone with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).

Diagnosed with ASD at age five, McCreary got hit with the performance bug not much later. During a difficult time in junior high, he started journaling, eventually turning his pain e into something empoweringâ??and funny. He scored his first stand-up gig at age 14, and hasn't looked back.

This unique and hilarious #OwnVoices memoir breaks down what it's like to live with autism for readers on and off the spectrum. Candid scenes from McCreary's life are broken up with funny visuals and factual asides. Funny, You Don't Look Autistic is an invaluable and compelling read for young readers with ASD looking for voices to relate to, as well as for readers hoping to broaden their understanding of ASD.… (mehr)

I read this thanks to the Big Library Read, and I thought it was a great pick. It was funny and interesting and educational, perfect to sit down with for an afternoon. ( )

I follow Michael McCreary on Facebook and enjoy the funny things he posts, I also have family who is on the autism spectrum. I can't believe that I didn't know that Michael grew up in Orangeville (40 mins from me), or that he now lives in Toronto (30 mins from me)! I didn't even know he was Canadian! So this was VERY exciting for me, ha.

This book isn't entirely what I expected, it's non-fiction memoir as opposed to a humourous book. It wasn't as funny as I thought it would be, but I did enjoy reading about Michael's rise in comedy, and the epilogue surprised me and just broke my heart.

I wouldn't say I learned anything new about autism since I live with someone who has it, but I think a lot of people who aren't familiar with ASD will find some very good tips among all the stories. ( )

I saw this on Overdrive as the "great library read." It wasn't anything spectacular but I did enjoy learning more about how those on the spectrum think/act/process. ( )

Stumbled upon this on Libby when I was between audiobooks and wanted something short for a road trip. The author was only 22 when he wrote it, but I learned a lot about ASD, and it was interesting to read a memoir written by someone so young, who can vividly recount very early childhood memories. It was also good to be reminded of what it’s like to be a teen, and what things are priorities at that age. The author is a comedian, but this is definitely a memoir, so if you’re looking for a sampling of his stand-up, you’ll be disappointed. If you want to understand people with ASD a little better, this is a good one. ( )
