"In return for a random act of kindness, scholar Li Bai Chang presents young cook Kat Holloway with a rare and precious gift--a box of tea. Kat thinks no more of her unusual visitor until two days later when the kitchen erupts with the news that Lady Cynthia's next-door neighbor has been murdered. Known about London as an "Old China Hand," the victim claimed to be an expert in the language and customs of China, acting as intermediary for merchants and government officials. But Sir Jacob's dealings were not what they seemed, and when the authorities accuse Mr. Li of the crime, Kat and Daniel find themselves embroiled in a world of deadly secrets that reach from the gilded homes of Mayfair to the beautiful wonder of Kew Gardens"--… (mehr)

I like these characters and I was entertained. ( )

Really enjoyed this one. The heroine, Mrs. Holloway, is returning from a shopping trip with her helper, Tess, when she bumps into a Chinese man and knocks him down. She helps him and the next night he returns with a gift for her of a box of tea. We learn that their neightbor who happens to be a collector of Chinese objects has been murdered and suspicion falls on Mr. Li. Mrs Holloway refuses to believe that this kind man had anything to do with murder and starts her own inquiry with the help of Tess, Lady Cynthia, Daniel, and Mr. Thanos. There's a secondary storyline with hiring of a new housekeeper who is mean old blackmailing tyrant that has to be handled.

I do find it amusing that she manages to serve up gourmet meals and deserts for employers while spending so much time out of the kitchen. ( )

Listened to audio narrated really well by Anne-Marie Piazza. I loved all of her accents, it really pulled me into Kat's world.

Kat Holloway and friends get involved in solving another murder as well as dealing with the horrible new housekeeper.

I love Kat's no nonsense, but kind hearted style and wish her relationship with Daniel McAdam would actually move along faster than it's current snail pace.

There's lots of great characters here to enjoy, and we get to learn a bit more about them this time but some are still keeping their secrets, while other secrets get revealed.

A nice historical, mystery with charming characters to entertain you.

The story is narrated by intrepid hired cook Kat Holloway (who has a knack for solving mysteries) when the master of the house next door; Sir Jacob Harkness, is murdered. Navigating the web of the upper class our protagonist and her cohorts assist the authorities with figuring out who murdered Sir Jacob. This book is a good clean murder mystery - nothing overly bloody or horrific. I love historical themed fiction novels. Death in Kew Gardens is very well written with many twists and turns along the way. I recommend reading this book if you like clean British murder mystery fun.

I originally got this book as an ARC copy from the Penguin Randomhouse First to Read program. I ended up purchasing my own copy when the book came out because the free reader programs absolutely sucked for it. The font was SO tiny it was giving me headaches trying to read it. I am actually really glad I bought it. This book is part of a series but it can be read as a standalone. The events of the prior novels do not heavily impact the story but I believe it would flesh out the characters and history a bit better. ( )

Death in Kew Gardens by Jennifer Ashley is the third in the series of Below Stairs Mysteries featuring Kat Holloway. While it is not absolutely necessary to have read the books in order, it is beneficial. Many of the characters continue as do the non-mystery plot lines from the previous books. This book adds a multicultural element into this very British setting and, in the context of a mystery, takes on the issue of prejudice, making it different than the ones before.
