About the only reason why I don't give this work top marks is that, despite the wealth of information of information that we have on the man, I'm not sure that the author quite achieved his ends. That is, to establish whether Charles' empire was an essentially impossible project, or whether Charles should essentially be regarded as being undone by his own mistakes. In the end, Parker concludes that success is a relative condition and that, while this empire was something of a fluke of circumstance, Charles made more good decisions than bad, while probably having more than his share of good luck.

A big part of the issue is that the game changed very rapidly over the course of Charles' active years of power, in that to contest France in Italy, defend the traditional lands of what was Burgundy, hold back the Ottoman empire, and contain Protestantism, there were simply too many factors in play. Not to mention adding the complexities of military and fiscal revolutions to the mix. The end result being that, despite the failures of policy and character, the author ends this work with a great deal of respect for the man.

Realistically speaking, this should not be the first book you read on Charles. Despite being rather old-school history, you might be better of reading "Four Princes" by John Julius Norwich, than try Parker's work. ( )

Een magistraal boek. Er zal vast af en toe op een detail wel iets aan te merken of toe te voegen zijn, maar Parker staat zozeer mijlenver boven de stof, beheerst zo volkomen al het materiaal in Frans Duits Engels Italiaans Spaans Portugees Nederlands en Latijn dat je alleen maar in stille bewondering kunt doorlezen. Er staat zo veel in het boek (en ik las zo traag) dat ik veel al vergeten ben, dit zijn maar een paar opmerkingen: Karel is ongelofelijk gespitst op zijn reputatie, zijn eer, misschien nog wel meer dan Henry of Francois. Hij heeft enorm veel geluk, ook al om keizer te worden (toevallig ontbreken of gaan dood zoons die eerder aan de beurt zouden zijn), maar ook bij bijna al zijn oorlogszuchtige ondernemingen. Maar geluk hoort bij macht. Hij is de machtigste man van zijn tijd met een ongekend groot rijk. Hij is rücksichtlos als het eromgaat zijnmoeder, die helemaal njiet zo waanzinnig is aanvankelijk, te misleiden, in een waanwereld op te sluiten en gek te maken, zijn zusters goed uit te huwelijken (tegen hun keuzes in) of anderszins te koejoneren , zijn jongere broer Ferdinand weg te doen en later te passeren als hij opgevolgd moet worden ten gunst van Filips II (mislukt). Bigotte zeer gelovige RK . Onbetrouwbaar in zijn afspraken, bijvoorbeeld met Lutheraanse vorsten, die hij toch opsluit, leugenaar over het vermoorden van Franse diplomaten, terwijl hij moord en brand schreeuwt als Francois I zijn beloftes verbreekt. Een onaangenaam mens, kortom. Een bedreven militair, die geniet van het krijgsbedrijf, een uitstekend administrateur (geholpen door adviseurs: Gattinara, Perrenot) met indrukwekkende adviezen en overwegingen voor zijn zoon Filips. Zijn landen lagen (te) ver uit elkaar, zijn persoonlijkheid kon niet geërfd worden door zijn opvolger stroeve Filips, in zijn familie heerste teveel inteelt (dit punt maakt Parker op basis van en recent boek, ik weet niet of dit echt zo'n gewichtige flaw is), hij verkeek zich op de Lutheranen. Maar zelf had hij daar allemaal nog niet zo'n last van. Stierf aan malaria volgens een nieuw onderzoek van een vingerkootje, waarvan Parker aannemelijk maat dat het valide is. ( )

Excelente libro que aporta una visión crítica de la obra y del personaje lejos de la grandilocuencia imperial presente en los historiadores españoles de la dictadura. Imprescindible junto con la obra del mismo autor "El rey imprudente" ( )
