Fiction. Science Fiction. Thriller. HTML:The first novel in a new trilogy starring veteran New Republic pilots!

On the brink of victory in a brutal war, five New Republic pilots transform from hunted to hunters in this epic Star Wars adventure. Set after Return of the Jedi, Alphabet Squadron follows a unique team, each flying a different class of starfighter as they struggle to end their war once and for all.

The Emperor is dead. His final weapon has been destroyed. The Imperial Army is in disarray. In the aftermath, Yrica Quell is just one of thousands of defectors from her former cause living in a desertersâ?? shantytownâ??until she is selected to join Alphabet Squadron.

Cobbled together from an eclectic assortment of pilots and starfighters, the five members of Alphabet are tasked by New Republic general Hera Syndulla herself. Like Yrica, each is a talented pilot struggling to find their place in a changing galaxy. Their mission: to track down and destroy the mysterious Shadow Wing, a lethal force of TIE fighters exacting bloody, reckless vengeance in the twilight of their reign.

The newly formed unit embodies the heart and soul of the Rebellion: ragtag, resourceful, scrappy, and emboldened by their most audacious victory in decades. But going from underdog rebels to celebrated heroes isnâ??t as easy as it seems, and their inner demons threaten them as much as their enemies among the stars. The wayward warriors of Alphabet Squadron will have to learn to fly together if they want to protect the new era of peace theyâ??ve fought so hard to achieve.

For my full review please visit my blog: https://geeking-by.net/review/star-wars-alphabet-squadron-by-alexander-freed/

I’m a big fan of the X-Wing novels from the Legends timeline so as soon as it was announced that a new starfighter series was in the works I was really excited. Nothing could replace those books, but as far as I’m concerned Star Wars isn’t Star Wars without its starfighter squadrons. Throw in Hera Syndulla who I fell in love within Star Wars Rebels and I’m sold!

Prior to reading this novel, I read the accompanying comic series, [b:Star Wars: TIE Fighter|44024202|Star Wars TIE Fighter|Jody Houser|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1568792681l/44024202._SY75_.jpg|68452425] by Chuck Wendig) which had been extremely disappointing. I clung to the link to the TIE Fighter comic series and reminded myself that one novel didn’t necessarily mean that all the new canon novels were going to be disappointing. The new comics have been absolutely brilliant. And so, I went into this book with an open mind…

… and I was thoroughly disappointed.

Let me start with the blatant lie I mentioned in the synopsis and go from there.

In the aftermath, Yrica Quell is just one of thousands of defectors from her former cause living in a deserters’ shantytown–until she is selected to join Alphabet Squadron. Cobbled together from an eclectic assortment of pilots and starfighters, the five members of Alphabet are tasked by New Republic general Hera Syndulla herself.

As I mentioned I’m a big fan of Hera so the idea of a new squadron run by her sounded awesome. In hindsight the synopsis only makes it sound like she is running the show, so I’ll give them that; it’s careful wordplay. A small spoiler here so I'm going to pop this bit under a spoiler tag:
However, it’s still a lie because Hera isn’t the one who gives them the task in the first place. She is involved, and it’s fantastic to see her, but in a much smaller capacity than the synopsis makes out. It’s a name drop to draw in fans of Star Wars Rebels.

Other than Hera the book is made up of brand new characters and there are a lot of them. Too many, to be honest. There are four separate narratives happening at the same time; Alphabet Squadron, Shadowing Squadron, the Imperial commanders and group of New Republic Military. The last group seems quite random at the start, and as the novel progresses their identity becomes evident. What confused me was how much effort was put into their narratives. The role they play in the novel didn’t require the amount of characterisation and detail that the author chose to go into, and many scenes regarding those characters seemed to be fluff to just bulk out the novel. Even when I realised who these characters were I didn’t feel the need to know anywhere near as much detail about them as I now did.

In comparison, I knew almost nothing about the main characters, the actual Alphabet Squadron. Being cagey and mysterious about your characters is one thing, but there’s a problem when you’re giving the reader a full character history of minor characters they’ll never meet again. I felt absolutely no empathy or bond to any of the main characters, and that’s a big problem. The only interest I had in them by the end of the book was to unravel their mysteries and that will only go so far for me.

For a novel which is built around a space fighter squadron, there were not that many space battles, at least for Alphabet Squadron itself. Most of the space battles scenes didn’t involve them, and for most of the book, they were out of the cockpit. It felt more like a spy novel than a space pilot one. The series has potential, although this does depend on what happens in the next novel. The members of Alphabet Squadron have enough personality, quirks and history that could be the foundation for a really good series. The problem is all the other junk in between. There is so much political rubbish in this novel whereas all I really wanted was for them to get in their ships and do what star pilots do best. I really feel like the author completely misunderstood what he was getting himself into when he signed up to write a series called Alphabet Squadron. If you want to go write a military novel, fine, but don’t label it a starfighter novel and drop a name like Hera Syndulla just so people will pick it up! ( )

Good idea, but a bit of a slog until you get to Hera's ship. Feels like a very drawn out first act, though I'm liking the "Rogue One" feel compared to the X-Wing series. ( )

Alphabet Squadron - Alexander Freed

The New Republic are in the ascendency and after The Battle of Endor, the Empire is scattered with factions trying to take control or to follow the Emperors final instructions.

For Yrica Quell, that isn’t her problem anymore, she is a defector and one that is trying to get back into the cockpit. Luckily for her, well if you can call it lucky, Caern Adan a New Republic Spy Master needs some ex-imperial help. This man is really on the wrong side, every thing about him screams Imperial! Whilst Quell is not exactly the ideal Rebel, she’s more interested in flying. But they are joined by a crack team, actually no they’re not. There’s Nath Tensent, another ex-Imperial, who is generally only concerned about himself, even when he cares for others, they are still well below him on his agenda. Wyl Lark, an idealistic and excellent pilot, to be fair he’s a pretty good addition to any team, except he has some serious home issues. Chass na Chadic another rebel pilot, who loves her music, and is pretty much suicidal other than that! Finally there is Kairos, we don’t know much about Kairos, except she’s homicidal and non-communicative.

And here in lies my problem, I really don’t care for the team they have assembled, I am fully aware that the idea is that this is a team of misfits and they aren’t meant to be your team of clean cut heroes, but in the Star Wars Universe I love, even the most irascible pilot has redeeming qualities, for these lot it is difficult to root for them rather than hope they get self-imploding over with!

However, it is a fine Star Wars story, the action is fast paced and incredibly descriptive, the tale is well-crafted and adds elements of danger and new worlds to this Universe. The Commanding Officer – General Syndulla will earn her place alongside Admiral Ackbar and General Crix Madine.

The idea behind the name of Alphabet Squadron’s name and make-up is excellent and brings together some of the finest and most iconic vehicles. If you love the Star Wars Universe you will enjoy this story. I enjoyed this story, I just didn’t care about the characters, except for Syndulla and Wyl and that is so important for me when reading. I will read the next book, this is one out of three, but am really hoping that everyone goes on a bit more of a personality journey in the next one. ( )

It takes a little while to keep all of the characters straight in your head, there are a lot of them, but it was worth sticking with. A story set soon after the events of the movie Return of the Jedi, or "The Battle of Endor" in SW novelspeak :-) it's all about the forming of a new group of pilots for the New Republic, the government that has formed from the victorious Rebel Alliance. The Empire may have fallen, but there are still many Imperial forces still out there, wreaking damage on New Republic planets and ships, trying to keep the Empire alive. We start with an Intelligence officer who recruits Yrica Quell, a former Imperial pilot, who used to be in the "Shadow Wing," a particularly ruthless and effective squadron of TIE Fighter pilots, to help him form a new squadron to go after the Shadow Wing. They end up five pilots with very different backgrounds, all flying five different kinds of ships, which is very unique in fighter squadrons--usually you have all X-Wings or all B-Wings, etc. And they all have lots of personality quirks and issues, and personal baggage, each desiring revenge against Shadow Wing or justice for fallen comrades killed by Shadow Wing. It's really interesting to see how they all eventually coalesce into a working unit and establish rapport with each other, despite their differences. Lots of flying scenes, of course, and battles both with starships and with inner demons. Good book. As always, I wish there was just one Jedi in it somewhere, but that's a different kind of SW book. :-) Sets up nicely for a sequel too, of course, but major plotlines are all brought to a close. ( )

Whoa. Gritty - more real than I expected.

Freed gives us the story of the forming of a motley crew - the eponymous "Alphabet Squadron," of the title. Drawing on decades of the GFFA, he creates a breathtakingly moving story of the swirl motives and backgrounds driving the team.

Funny - after finishing this, I went back to reading "Second Foundation," the classic by Asimov. While Asimov is certainly groundbreaking, I was surprised by how ... two-dimensional his book seemed in contrast. (Not a slam on Asimov - just a recognition of the depth of what Freed crafted,( ( )
