The critically adored, New York Times bestselling Deborah Underwood delights with a hilariously meta celebration of storytelling out of control. Every story needs a problem. But Panda doesn't have a problem. Unless . . . Panda is the problem. The New York Times bestselling author of Here Comes the Easter Cat and The Quiet Book loses control of the narrative in the funniest, most exuberant, most kid-delighting way in this adventurous ode to what makes a story--and what makes a story great. "Highly entertaining and laugh-out-loud funny."--Kirkus "Supremely silly."--Publishers Weekly "Excellent...Cute, cute book."--School Library Connection "Entertaining...humorous." --BCCB "Kid-friendly...visually appealing...cheeky...adorable."--The Horn Book "Hilarious, inventive...A joyful read aloud." --SLJ, The Classroom Bookshelf… (mehr)

Mrs. Underwood has created a wonderful way to help students understand how to write a story. This is a very comical book that catches the readers attention on how a story is created. This book would be wonderful for teachers to use in English class to start a lesson on how to create a story. This book covers the importance of a main character, a story line, and an imagination. All important qualities for future writers. This book is also great to help English language learners to understand how stories are created. ( )

A hilarious meta twist on narrators and protagonists. A great book to read aloud, especially if your daughter is home from college for a long weekend. ( )

The panda who's supposed to have a problem tells the narrator that, in fact, SHE is the one with the problem; the panda is doing just fine! A funny, meta look at story construction (the main character needs a problem to solve, because "that's how stories work"). ( )

A delightfully roly-poly panda wreaks hilarious havoc in the latest addition to the popular genre of books bending the traditional picture book narrative.

The story begins, like all stories do, with a problem. But wait! This panda has no problem. No problem? How can there be a story with no problem? A hilarious conversation ensues between the increasingly exasperated narrator and the cheerfully indifferent panda, munching away on bamboo, as the narrator tries to get the story going and the panda just. won't. cooperate! But wait, the panda has an idea! Maybe the problem in this book... is the panda! What if the panda starts...play a banjo? Chaos ensues until suddenly the panda (and the panda's double) DO have a real problem - they're hungry! A bargain is struck and the story comes to its silly and satisfying conclusion.

Hannah Marks produces an excellent illustrator debut with her mischievous panda and ensuing problems. From the innocently pleased panda in a leafy bower of bamboo to the chaos of jellybeans, banjos, aliens, and penguins, Marks' sweet cartoons will keep kids laughing as they blend perfectly with Underwood's exasperated prose.

Verdict: This is a delightful addition to picture books breaking the fourth wall; Read for a riotous storytime and listen to the growing giggles of your audience as they follow the wacky adventures of this naughty panda. I've read this to about 600 kids before school ended and all universally acclaimed it!

When the narrator of this new meta-fictional picture-book from author Deborah Underwood begins to spin a tale of a panda bear with a problem, the subject of her story blithely insist he doesn't have any kind of problem. No matter how much she questions him, the panda can't think of any issue. Finally he decides that she, the narrator, must be the one with the problem, and that that problem is him. Seizing control of the story, he takes it in a direction the narrator doesn't expect. But when he ends up in a jam, he appeals to her to get him back to his bamboo grove...

Having enjoyed a number of Deborah Underwood's other picture-books, from The Quiet Book and its sequels to Interstellar Cinderella, I picked up The Panda Problem with a feeling of anticipation. I don't know if it's just that I've grown a little tired of the meta-fictional "breaking the fourth wall" picture-book craze, but somehow this one just didn't appeal to me as much as I had expected. There's nothing really wrong here - the story is fun, the artwork cute - but I think I prefer books like Mélanie Watt's Chester, when it comes to this kind of thing. Still, tastes vary, so readers in the market for new meta-fictional picture-books might want to give this one a try. ( )
