In this delightful collection of classic Peanuts comics for younger readers, Lucy rallies her friends to speak out for equal rights for women. Between social causes and dropping fly balls in the outfield, Lucy decides to write a biography of Beethoven, much to Schroeder's dismay. Meanwhile, life in the Peanuts gang is as hilarious as always: Woodstock takes up farming, Peppermint Patty struggles to make the grade, and Charlie Brown's rotten luck lands him in the hospital. Lucy is standing up for equal rights for women, Woodstock takes up farming, Peppermint Patty is having trouble with schoolwork, Charlie Brown's bad luck lands him in the hospital, and Snoopy's just having a good ol' time. Peanuts comics are always a joy to read and they always bring a smile to my face. It doesn't matter how old you are, pick up a copy! There's something in here for everyone.

Thank you to Netgalley and Andrews McMeel Publishing for an ARC. ( )

Fans of the comic strip "Peanuts" must be thrilled at the series of books being put out by McMeel Publishing. They contain daily and Sunday strips, all published in full color. "Lucy, Speak Out!" contains 168 pages of strips, commonly reprinted with two 4-block comics per page. (The six-block Sunday strips are reprinted in two- page spreads). The strips are undated, but are appear to be from the mature period of Charles Schulz's work (after the 1960s).

The comic strips are well- chosen, and offer a fine way to revisit a comic strip that has been part of American (US) popular culture for 70 years. I remembered several of the strips, and a number brought smiles of recognition and enjoyment. All the characters are represented, with the standard traditional topics.

Notwithstanding the cover and title, the comics in "Lucy, Speak Out!" follow no particular theme. Nevertheless, text on the back of the book jacket implies a focus on women's rights and activities, as illustrated through "Lucy". Text in the collection's afterward describes Schultz's interest in women's equality in sports and society, along with a few strips that illustrate such issues. However, the comic strips presented in the rest of the book are apolitical, and seldom allude to such issues. The point is worth making since at least one reviewer at Amazon expressed disappointment that feminist issues are not much reflected in the comics chosen. ( )

What a walk down memory lane! I used to read the Sunday comics and I never missed The Peanuts gang each week. I loved reading this book and seeing that they are up to some new things while also sticking with some tried and true shenanigans. Readers young and old will enjoy this book and I am excited to introduce my own kids to this great crew. A big thank you to NetGalley and Andrews McNeel Publishing for a copy of this book. All opinions are my own. ( )

With Peanuts, you know you're going to have a good time. While we were fans of Peanuts at home, I never read much of the comics when I was younger. Thus, I'm having a great time reading many of them for the first time.

This volume focuses around Lucy, who is loud at the best of times and definitely in this one. As per usual, I much liked Woodstock. There is also some social commentary about gender equality which remains a hot topic still.

Would recommend!

Thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for providing me with a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review! ( )

I love the Peanuts cartoons. However, I feel the way this series of books is divided into a specific character, in this case Lucy, just loses the story behind each strip. If the book was full panels in chronically order there would be an overarching story that is lost when just strips of Lucy are put on display. ( )
