Take some time to learn about the inspiring story of Edwin Binney. He was the amazing inventor of one of the world's most loved toys... Crayola Crayons!

Edwin Binney, inventor, and the creator of Crayola crayons was in the business of producing carbon black, a new kind of pigment. Edwin had invented a new inexpensive slate gray, smooth writing pencil, a white chalk that was dusty and didn’t crumble and a black wax crayon that could write on wood and paper packaging. His wife, Alice, encourage him to invent a better, cheaper colored crayon for children he began. The experimentation with color and wax brought him to the first 8 pack, non toxic crayon that we know today. The name Crayola was also suggested by his wife, Alice from the French words, craie for stick of chalk, and oleaginous, meaning oily in texture became the word Crayola.
In the back of the book there are pictures from the factory and explanations as to how the crayons are made today. ( )

This picture book biography tells the story of Edwin Binney, who brought colorful wax crayons to the world through the Crayola brand.

Like me, many readers might not be familiar with Edwin Binney; in fact, many of us have never stopped to think about a time before crayons existed being as they are such a common supply found in classrooms, libraries, and even restaurants. So this title was very insightful in bringing that story to life and talking about what writing/coloring instruments were available before crayons became widely available.

The illustrations are (not surprisingly) bursting with colorful images that draw the eye in. The book ends with a page spread about how Crayola manufactures crayons today. Additional backmatter includes a brief one-page summary of Binney's life and a selected bibliography.

This book would pair nicely with Pocket Full of Colors, a picture book biography about artist Mary Blair, as both books show an interest in and love of splendid, colorful art. ( )

This biography tells the true story of an inventor who loved different colors found in nature so much that he worked hard to invent something that would bring the outside world to children - a crayon! Although it is a biography, it follows the story of the crayons more than the story of the inventor. Regardless, this story uses bright illustrations to highlight the informative text and tell the story of the crayon. In the classroom I would use this to help students brainstorm ways that they solved everyday problems to make things better. This would encourage to think about inventions and how they themselves can be inventors. ( )
