A thin little paperback explaining the fundamentals of the game. Written in descriptive notation. ( )

I feel that as a beginning Chess player, this was a very good first book to read. Chapter 1 starts at the ground floor--rules of moving, et cetera. In chapter 2 you will learn how to read notation; however it will be Descriptive notation. Currently used is the older Algebraic notation. Many Chess books use Descriptive notation which was popular for most of the 20th Century in the West. Chapter 3 covers the basic Checkmates and Relative Value of the forces. Chapter 4 covers a few Chess Openings--very fun stuff. I found that out of the few listed within this chapter, my favorite is "The Queen's Gambit". You will learn several Double King Pawn openings, Single King Pawn openings, Double Queen Pawn openings and Single Queen Pawn openings. Chapter 5 may be the most important, covering Middle Game play--Forks, Pins, Double Attacks, et cetera. Chapter 6 deals with End Game strategy. Chapter 7 concludes.

I found it very useful to purchase a Pocket Chess set for studying the notation in the book as I read it. I am using a 5" Sheesham wood board with magnetic wooden pieces. I love it! I would also like to get a leather Chess Wallet, also known as Checkbook Chess... ( )
