I’m not really sure how I feel about “Her.” It starts strong, with recently-separated Sadie becoming interested in self-help guru Ann who has moved into her neighborhood. Ann is everything Sadie isn’t: stunning, successful, driven… thin. She offers Sadie advice and encouragement and draws her into a world of privilege where what Ann wants, Ann gets. The problem is, sometimes she wants revenge. Sadie suspects Ann of killing the people she perceives has wronged her. She doesn’t shy away from this and then things get… weird. The book becomes confusing and disjointed. The trick of it is figuring out who “her” is between alternating chapters told mostly from Sadie’s viewpoint. I swear I’m still not sure! And yes, I read the whole thing. I didn’t skim one bit. I won’t spoil it, but if “she” is who I think she is… well… it just doesn’t make sense. I think it isn’t “her” speaking, but someone talking about one of the “hers” in the book. Then there’s the ending. At about 70% of the way through, the story switches gears. Again, I don’t want to spoil anything, but it feels like this thing I’ve read about writing a rough draft, where the “butt” doesn’t match the “face.” All of what goes on with Ann and her husband… it’s like two or three stories thrown haphazardly together. Britney King writes unconventional stories and I really liked the Water Trilogy. “Her” is a similarly compelling read without the polish and finish. I went along for the ride, trusting that the author would circle back and tie everything together in a more satisfying way. I have genuinely enjoyed several of her other books. Just not this one. It’s a personal taste thing, probably, and not every book resonates with every reader. I did love the co-dependence angle and there are some really poignant observations on female friendships, but I think had the trick of “Her,” been eliminated, had the story been told solely from Sadie’s viewpoint, it would have been a stronger book. “Her” feels like a poorly-executed gimmick, which is a bummer because the author is undoubtedly talented. Overall, it wasn’t bad. I just didn’t love it. "Murder is astonishingly predictable. Since the beginning of time we've been sleeping, eating, having sex, and murdering each other. And not necessarily in that order". Her by Britney King SPOILERS: I did not get it. I do not understand anything about this book. Read to the end..finished it. But I am sorry to say disliked. There was hardly any actual dialogue. The neighbor's husband had no depth to him and seemed to just be an insane killer. The whole relationship between the two neighbors was bizarre and I do not feel this was a psychological thriller. I actually feel like this was a traditional horror.thriller. There was nothing psychological in it and some aspects were pretty icky. Also much sex abounds! Sex and mad doctors and murder and waking up drugged..all with limited conversations. I do think this should have been marketed more as a horror. It was creepy enough to be and did not read like a traditional psychological thriller Britney King loves to deliver a twisted, psychological thriller that makes it almost impossible to put down. Her is another fantastic addition to my reading list and I can hardly wait for more. The truth will set you free, but first it will piss you off. Joe Klaus With an opening like that, I grit my teeth and clench my hands tightly around my ereader, anticipating another fabulous psychological thriller from Britney King…and I was not disappointed. When I read the Prologue, I thought, “I wonder what she is setting me up for.” Britney King is very creative when it comes to her villains. Many times she has me rooting for them, making me love them and wanting things to work out for them. Be careful thinking the grass is greener on the other side. It may be infested with evil. Sadie…she is finding out that once you are in, you are never out. Now, how can I turn my back on her. I am bopping along, at a steady pace, watching her be manipulated, twisted, and perverted into keeping some nefarious secrets. Secrets, betrayal…how can she live like that? Britney King has a way of taking a normal neighborhood and with her casual air creates a location of danger and death. Somehow her imagination comes up with way of surprising me, jerking me out of an I know this attitude. I voluntarily reviewed a free copy of Her by Britney King. See more at http://www.fundinmental.com Well now. This book was crazy. A through and through psychological thriller. Thanks to the author, Britney King, I was given the chance to read this book in exchange for a review and it didn't disappoint. When Ann Banks moves in down the road, Sadie has no idea what she's in for. Ann befriends her and Sadie quickly learns that there's more to Ann than meets the eye. She has everything you could possibly want or need. They form a close relationship but when Ann lets Sadie in her secrets the friendship takes a turn. I can't honestly say that I saw that coming. "Sadie is jealous. Why wouldn't she be? Her life is falling apart. Meanwhile, her new neighbor is everything she is not. Ann is perfect--the kind of woman everyone loves to hate--and a best friend to die for. She hosts over-the-top dinner parties, takes parenting to an entirely different level, and makes ambition look sexy as hell. Sadie learns quick: the best way to cure jealousy is to befriend it. She also learns there's more to her new friend than meets the eye. She's patient, she's kind, and possibly a serial killer. It isn't until Ann's proclivities hit a little too close to home that Sadie has to ask herself how much she's willing to overlook in the name of getting what she wants."--Back cover. Psycho meets psycho meets psycho... and what do you get when you add that all up? A bunch of fked up people doing a bunch of fked up things ...
Many people may find Sadie weak, but characters can't all be perfect. It's who her character is. Characters are characters, nothing more nothing less. I enjoy the story for the story, so I give it 5 stars. ( )
