Good to dip into, but reading all the way through had me yawning in places. ( ) "For over 500 years they have provided order, direction and momentum to the life of the nation." This is the final sentence from this long but fascinating book and pretty much sums up the author's view of the middle class. Not quite a Marxist one! For those interested in social history It's well worth the time. It does however completely leave out anything other than the most token references about the gay and lesbian communities. I mention this only because in most other respects it is very comprehensive. Zeige 2 von 2 keine Rezensionen | Rezension hinzufügen
This is the enthralling story of the great powerhouse of British history - the middle class. The death of feudalism, the advancement of democracy, the spread of literacy, the industrial and sexual revolutions, the development of mass media - the middle class is never far away, drawing up petitions, pushing for change in attitude and legislation, engaging in philanthropy. In this scholarly and hugely entertaining account, Lawrence James brings to life the stories of churchmen and charity-workers, lawyers and lobbyists to create an engaging and colourful social and political panorama. Richly textured and highly relevant, this is narrative history at its best. Keine Bibliotheksbeschreibungen gefunden. |
