Biography & Autobiography. Performing Arts. Nonfiction. Humor (Nonfiction.) HTML:From the comedian, actor, and former host of The Late Late Show comes an irreverent, lyrical memoir in essays featuring his signature wit.

Craig Ferguson has defied the odds his entire life. He has failed when he should have succeeded and succeeded when he should have failed. The fact that he is neither dead nor in a locked facility (at the time of printing) is something of a miracle in itself. In Craigâ??s candid and revealing memoir, listeners will get a look into the mind and recollections of the unique and twisted Scottish American who became a national hero for pioneering the worldâ??s first TV robot skeleton sidekick and reviving two dudes in a horse suit dancing as a form of entertainment.

In Riding the Elephant, there are some stories that are too graphic for television, too politically incorrect for social media, or too meditative for a stand-up comedy performance. Craig discusses his deep love for his native Scotland, examines his profound psychic change brought on by fatherhood, and looks at aging and mortality with a perspective that he was incapable of as a younger man. Each story is strung together in a colorful tapestry that ultimately reveals a complicated man who has learned to processâ??and even enjoyâ??the unusual trajectory of his life.

A collection of random thoughts and memories sprinkled with the author's signature humor. A mixed bag with no clear direction, so I'd say it's only for fans.

While "American on Purpose: The Improbable Adventures of an Unlikely Patriot" felt like a victory lap on "making it" in the USA with a clear arc and themes, this one has no single focus and it's hard to summarize it. I'd say it presents what comes after you sign off from the showbiz race and discover other purposes in life. There are themes of facing one's own fears, dealing with death, building a family, thinking about one's legacy... but there is also a 3 page long description of Japanese toilets and few more pages about the author's tattoos. Every meaningful insight is undercut with some silliness that I couldn't care less about, so it was a bumpy ride and the elephant stumbled a bit.

If you are a Craig's fan, go for the audiobook (maybe it's worth an extra star?). If you are not, skip this one - I think it doesn't give enough context to stand on its own feet, so remove one star from my rating. ( )

Road trip audiobook!

I was flailing about for a book to listen to on a car trip and picked this one based on the fact that I liked Craig Ferguson's performance as Owl in the 2011 Winnie the Pooh movie singing about the Backson, his supporting role on Drew Carey's old sitcom, and a funny stand-up routine about Sean Connery I once randomly downloaded to iTunes from a free Amazon comedy sampler. I've never seen more than snippets of his talk show.

This isn't as funny as I'd hoped it would be as Ferguson reflects on his family history and alcoholism and makes a few stabs at some literary passages, but I was entertained overall for the length of my drive and will probably seek out his earlier autobiography at some point.

For the sensitive: Ferguson can be a jackass as he pushes back against political correctness with his paranoid take on the MeToo movement and some other unnecessary and unwelcome opinions. Proceed with caution. ( )

I enjoyed this book but not as much as I did American On Purpose.
When I read American On Purpose it felt like I was getting a "behind the scenes" look at Craig Ferguson and I was getting to know him better. In Riding The Elephant it felt more like we were sitting, having coffee and he was going "did I tell you about..."
Don't get me wrong, it was a nice read but it felt a bit too random for me. ( )

The only reason I was interested in reading this was because I read a short story by Craig Ferguson, (though I can't remember which collection it was in), and I really enjoyed it. I enjoyed this audiobook as well.

Craig Ferguson is a Scottish-American and he is hilarious. He's honest about his addictions and alcoholism, about his marriages and about his career. At times I nearly lost it, listening to him talk about the huge zit that appeared on his nose, just before the big school dance. He talked about stepping in dog poop. He talked about sports teams...(yeah, the Packers v. Broncos bit just slayed me.)

Overall, this book was fun and now I would like to read or listen to more of his work.

Recommended!
