"Hannah is a thirty-something wife, home-health worker, and antiwar activist. Her husband, Johnny, is a stay-at-home pothead working--or 'working'--on building them a house before the winter chill sets in. They're currently living and screwing in the back of a truck, hoping for a pregnancy, which seems like it will never come. Legs in the air, for a better chance at conception, Hannah scans fertility Reddits while Johnny dreams about propagating plants--kale, tomatoes--to ensure they have sufficient sustenance should the end times come, which, given their fragile democracy strained under the weight of a carceral state and the risk of horrible war, doesn't seem so far off. Helping Hannah in her fight for the future is her best friend Gabby, a queer naturalist she idolizes and who adores her. Helping Johnny build the house is Tyler, an off-the-grid conspiracy theorist driven sick by his own cloudy notions of reality."--… (mehr)

The Hard Tomorrow seemed really interesting. I just don't think I was in the right mindset to read this as I just found it sad and exhausting. First, The Illustrations are great and does justice to the story. Davis held nothing back with this story but honestly, I just hated everyone and definitely didn't like how it ended. Had I been in a different mindset this may have hit me more emotionally but I just did not care for it.

Overall, not for me right now ( )

On the day of the 2020 Women's March, it was fun to read a book that took place deep in the culture of activism, where marchers lead chants against causes they are working to forward. Some amazing art and some really familiar (i.e., very real) characters although the story lacks resolution. Enjoyable and quick read. ( )

Hannah and her partner Johnny are living in the back of their truck in the woods of Kentucky working on having a baby. Hannah is supporting them while Johnny is hanging out, smoking weed, while gradually building them a house, and planning to grow organic vegetables so they can survive after civilization or the state collapses. When she is not at work as a care provider for an elderly woman, Hannah demonstrates against chemical weapons manufacturers and fascism, or goes mushroom hunting in the wild with her friend, Gabby. She doesn’t like Johnny’s friend Tyler, a fellow pot head and prepper, who’s helping Johnny construct the house. It might be because Tyler wears camo, has an intense stare, and lives by himself in what he calls a compound with a lot of cats and guns. He’s sure that Mark Zuckerberg is using drones to spy on him.

Death enters and Hannah and Johnny each are hit with the hard reality of a loss of a close friend. Their individual grief, anger and despair exhausts them. Silence overtakes them, mirrored in their snow covered campsite, followed gently in panels of the changing seasons to the birth of new life.

So many little parallels in this book’s twinned stories. Davis has always been fixated on the big question of how snd why we keep going in life - how.ir can be so good and so bad at once. This continues that trend, with Hannah and her husband keeping on keeping on for reasons that seem slightly less rationale than Gabby and her male survivalist counterpart’s nihilism. Davis doesn’t offer any relief, but that b itself feels quite honest to me. The world is stressful and scary, and choosing life is irrational and hard, yet we cannot help ourselves and do so. ( )
