It's the summer of 1944, and the U.S. is at war. Times are tough for Sidney Craven, who has to supplement the sporadic income from his one-man Los Angeles detective agency by writing crime stories for pulp magazines. Then, a wounded war hero--recently home from overseas--hires Craven to locate his missing wife, an actress who disappeared on the very day she was supposed to start a new film. Craven begins his investigation by visiting her Hollywood studio. Before his snooping gets him run off the lot, a costar gives Craven a tip that eventually leads him to a jazz club in South Central L.A. Unlike with his usual divorce cases, he finds himself entangled in a narrative that includes blackmail and murder. His own life in danger, Craven doggedly tracks down clues and attempts to lure the prime suspect into what could be a fateful confrontation.… (mehr)

A nice popcorn read in the Sam Spade/Phillip Marlowe and femme fatale detective style fiction. A bit flat, a bit predictable and left me looking for a bit more. An easy read if you're looking for something you can pick up and put down time and again but nothing that makes it stand out from a crowded field of noir novels. ( )

This is an okay book for me
The characters were entertaining, the twists and turns kept me reading and wanting to know what's next....but
It felt like something is missing, I can't put my finger on it. It's hard to explain but I was expecting more from this book.

If you're looking to pass some time this might be a book to read ( )

Hal Schick as Dime Detective Sidney Craven, an off-beat private investigator (PI), provides the reader with an interesting yes even entertaining dialogue that left me wanting a bit more from this crime novel. There are just enough twists and turns in the story to keep the reader on their toes and yes, I enjoyed this ‘detective’ novel and rated it three stars.

I received a copy of the ebook from LibraryThing for an honest review. ( )

Dime Detective by Hal Shick
A mild noir story that takes place in the 1940s in LA. There’s a gumshoe, good guys and bad guys( mostly bad guys) and a couple of pretty women.
A missing persons case investigated by private detective Craven turns into a murder case. Not so much twists and turns as there are clues doled out as the investigation continues. Snarky comments are at a minimum but very well placed.
Very entertaining. ( )
