The second Montana Marshalls book picks up right where Knox left off. While Tate takes center stage in his struggle to protect Glo, the woman he’s fallen for, the rest of the siblings also have big parts to play. Some questions are answered but new challenges rise to face the family.

I can’t wait for Ford to see where the family saga goes next.

3.5 stars--rating seen may vary depending on whether site allows half star ratings.

The second book in Warren's "Montana Marshalls" series. Though the book does have Tate Marshall and Gloria Jackson as the 2 main characters, we also get to see continuations of stories of Rueben (the oldest Marshall brother) and Ginny, and Knox (the second oldest Marshall brother) and Kelsey as well as Ford (Tate's younger brother) and his logistic/ops teammate whose name is escaping me at the moment--and we even get to learn more about the lone Marshall sister, Ruby Jane.

IMO, Warren needs to focus a bit more on the action tension and less on the psychological/emotional tension. It would have made it a more enjoyable read for me. I grew weary of the constant back and forth of the romance between Tate and Glo. Both acted like jerks to the other mid-book and yet they still kept coming back to each other. Ugh.

WARNING: REVIEW MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS. READ AT YOUR OWN DISCRETION

The book begins with a recap excerpt from "Knox". Despite reading that not too long ago, it still took me a bit to place where they were and what was going on--and some of what this book claimed was an excerpt was not anything I remembered from "Knox"--of course the POV has shifted to Tate for this book.

Tate's past catches up with him. Physically, there are some fights and insinuations about his past. Tate also shares what happened with his family for the first time and finds some healing.

Again there are several dichotomies where different family members see the same incident in different ways: Tate getting bucked off a horse at 6 and breaking his arm but not having it seen to for 2 days; Tate's troubled teen years; Tate's leaving home to enlist after high school instead of taking the football scholarship to college.

Ford and Tate both have military backgrounds. Ford with the SEALs and Tate as an ex-Ranger. One would think they'd have bonded over this shared skill set in the past, but apparently not. ( )

I love everything I’ve read by Susan May Warren—and that includes her upcoming release, Tate. The second in the Montana Marshalls series, it’s an addictive read, full of romance and danger.

Acting as a bodyguard for the woman he loves has put Tate Marshall in quite a predicament. He wants to protect Gloria “Glo” Jackson from the threats she’s receiving, but she doesn’t want to hide—and isn’t sure she wants to love a man whose life is on the line. Added to the drama is wrestling with being good enough and belonging, and these two have plenty to sort through as danger threatens and escalates.

All in all, I highly enjoyed Tate. I will admit that it would have been better to start with Knox before jumping into this story, but as I read, I picked up what I needed to know. Now, I can’t wait to see what’s next for the series (but in the meantime, I’ll just go read Book #1).

I received a complimentary copy of this book and the opportunity to provide an honest review. I was not required to write a positive review, and all the opinions I have expressed are my own. ( )

Few people write alpha males with hard heads and a dominant protective instinct as well as Susan May Warren. Add to that an intense romance, lives in danger, and a group of people who support each other, and is it any wonder her books are on must-read lists everywhere?

In the Montana Marshalls series, that group of people that supports each other is the Marshall family. Five men and one woman, all of who are involved in demanding careers and all who (hopefully) will find their matches.

If you, like me, are coming into this in book two, let me say that you’ll probably enjoy Tate more if you go back and read Knox first (and how great is it that you can get it on sale right now!). However, much of the backstory that occurred in Knox is hashed out in this one, so while you may feel lost with some of it for a while, it works itself out.

I admit, Glo drove me a little crazy in this book. For someone who Tate loves, she was too wishy-washy most of the time. She wants to be with Tate then she’s pushing him away and with another guy. She lets her mom manipulate her and doesn’t go after her own dreams. Plus, she’s completely blind to the way everyone is manipulating her life (even when she’s told so by her friends).

But the attempts on Glo’s life, Tate’s determination to stop them, and the addition of Ford and Scarlett (can’t wait for book three!) keep the fast-clipped pace of an intense suspense despite that tumultuous relationship.

And the ending? Yeah, that’s sure to pull readers in through the entire series. Did I mention I’m already looking forward to book three?
