... We are in the hands of an expert and one vivid example is the way in which Simon Brett gives us an extemely detailed, sensitive comparison of the two published versions [of The story of Noah (1931)]; the first is in a small print run by F J Ward with Ella's handwritten text, reversed, and the second, published by Frederick Warne & Co in January 1946 with typset [sic.] text, permitted after all the original artwork and lithographic separations had been destroyed in the blitz. The couple clearly understood the way children read and the importance of the layout, grouping of words and pictures to clarify the narrative and understanding. A joy to behold, matching pages of the two publications Brett places side by side so that we can see the impact of changes. Brett's viewpoint is convincing and the close scrutiny fascinating. He concludes 'Overall, the first book gets as near perfection of its kind as could be, the second, compromised by reworking, lacks its fresh charm and effortless command. But they both convey the central sense of silent wonder at the animals themselves.' ... It is no surprise that this impressive volume containing so many striking examples of Webb's individualistic work should also be brimming with life.
Clifford Webb (1894-1972) was one of Britain's foremost wood engravers and a successful illustrator of children's books, but today his work is often overlooked. Held in high esteem by his peers, he studied under Eric Gill and Walter Sickert, and later taught at St Martin's, but much of his work was either deliberately destroyed or otherwise failed to survive. Now, the renowned wood engraver Simon Brett has painstakingly assembled much of what remains of this extraordinary artist's output for this first book about Webb.
