I enjoyed about half of the poems in this collection, which is his first published. This one had his juvenile poems sandwiched between Voices of the Night and Earlier Poems. The ones I tend to enjoy focuse on nature, mourning, love, and death. There's quite a bit of beauty in these lines of young Longfellow. ( ) This type of cover must have been an after market purchase. I've seen a few on other books since I bought this one. The three dimensional cover is remarkable, but fragile. The title on the front is handwritten (I believe from the person who placed it on there). This work appears to have been often published, in various forms, but I've only seen one other copy from this publisher. It contains a lengthy biographical sketch by Nathan Haskell Dole, and a large collection of Longfellow's works, including translations of the works of other poets. There are also a few plates meant to accompany the poems, done in the style of the day. The sketch is written by the son of one of the pupils that Longfellow taught. It's a beautiful thing. Excerpt from Voices of the Night, and Other Poems At the age of fifteen this shy, studious lad was sent to Bowdoin College at Brunswick, Maine, after Portland Academy had taught him all it knew. He came prepared to make the most of his opportunities, and after four years of hard work graduated with distinction, and with the promise of a professorship after a year of travel had broadened his mental horizon.
