1928. A readable yet highly literate study of the life and times of French poet Villon. While little is known of Villon's birth or death, there is a great deal to be found on his recalcitrant life. He was a French Poet, a thief, and a general vagabond. In his poems the ancient forms of French verse are animated with the keenest sense of personal emotion, of love, of melancholy, of mocking despair, and of repentance for a life passed in taverns and prisons. Villon b. 1431 raised by priest, took master's degree Uni. of Paris. At 24 he killed a man in a brawl. After burglarizing College of Navarre left Paris went to Blois chateau hosted by Charles of Orleans. Pursued women, freed from dungeons by the influential priest he called "more than my father" back in Paris at 31, he faced gibbet again sentenced to ten years exile. Farewell to his impoverished mother he vanished. Dedication and Preface, not the least stimulating portions of the book), he presents a three-dimensional, unsentimental Villon, a sensual idler and criminal, weak, mercurial, but possessed of four stable virtues-faith, patriotism, filial love, gratitude. This man's tortured, gusty spirit was luminous with great poetry. [various sources] (
