While I enjoyed the book and was interested in all the historical events it covered, I felt the author let himself down by the emphasis he placed on the years of Mountbatten's life alone after Lady Mountbatten's death. He included too much information about Mountbatten's supposed sex life, some of which was hearsay, and which did not add to the quality of his work. He appeared to definitely favor Edwina and glossed over her numerous indiscretions. ( ) Covering much of the 20th century, this well researched non-fiction account of the lives of Louis Mountbatten and Edwina Ashley before, during and after their marriage ended upon Edwina's untimely death. Their strong and determined personalities enabled them to achieve their own desires, and pursue their own careers and love interests often to the detriment and abandonment of the other partner. With Louis's royal connections and naval career and Edwina's inherited wealth and pursuit of worthy causes they had the means to live 'almost' separate lives, and theirs was an open marriage, common enough within their circle of friends and acquaintances at that time. The period covering Lord Louis's life after he lost his wife, was, in my opinion, rather too revealing, considering much of it was hearsay. Edwina seemed to have been treated with kid gloves by comparison, which created in my mind a bias. A capture of past times thru a very difficult period, a reflection on the life style of the endowed rich & powerful. Driven by his fathers sacking from the 1st lordship because of his German sounding name, he was a man who didn't allow family, people or rivals to get in his desired path. If he had been a more family man maybe his wife Edwina would have restrained in her social & sexual enterprises. Her energies were diverted in WW2 & shows how energetic & bright she was with her efforts in the nursing & ambulance direction. She also used her contacts to help her husbands career. His career was long & varied, Viceroy of India, the navy, admiral, First lord & commander South East Asia. With such a long & powerful career it is inevitable he had his detractors, and fans but he had the position, drive & self serving cunning to survive & prosper. Well researched well done worth a second read. Zeige 4 von 4 keine Rezensionen | Rezension hinzufügen
