Maya Indians date back to some four thousand five hundred years ago, when Mayan ancestors settled down in present-day Guatemala. This community was ahead of their time: their complex and stratified social organization, with priests, architects, mathematicians and artists playing key roles, is reflected in the magnificent architecture of cities, such as Tikal, Uxmal or Palenque. They worshiped several gods, and one of the most popular ones was the great feather serpent god Kukulkan. They developed an elaborate writing and numbering system, which included the "cero," a breakthrough in those days. Maize was their major crop; however, they also grew squash, chili pepper, cassava, avocado, cocoa and tomato.
