Five years ago, Damiskos's brilliant military career was cut short, leaving him with a permanent disability and scars that are not all physical. Adrift and still grieving, he tries to find meaning in an unsatisfying job. Work takes him to the remote seaside villa of an old friend, where, among an odd assortment of guests, he meets the eunuch sword-dancer Varazda. Enigmatic and beautiful but distinctly prickly, Varazda is the antithesis of the straightforward and serious Damiskos. Yet as they keep getting in each other's way at the villa, their mutual dislike is complicated by a spark of undeniable attraction. Then the villa's guests begin to reveal their true characters and motivesno one here is what they seemand Damiskos finds himself at the centre of a bizarre web of espionage, theft, and assassination. Varazda may need Damiskos's help, but not as much as Damiskos, finally awakening to a new sense of life and purpose, needs Varazda. Sword Dance is the first book in the Sword Dance trilogy, an m/m romance set in an imaginary ancient world, with murderous philosophy students, sex acts named after fruit, and love blossoming in the midst of mayhem.… (mehr)

This was quite enjoyable: an alternate history setting, good characters, and an intriguing set of problems to solve. There's engaging handicapped rep and fem male rep, as well as great women characters and just terrible (great!) bad guys. It is a m/m romance, but it's so much more than that, too. Recommended! ( )

Just chugging through books I'd checked out and never read.

I probably should have dropped this one a few chapters in - I felt absolutely no connection with any of the characters. And everything was just too....one-dimensional? Like, the background plot wasn't too bad, but in actuality everybody was super one-dimensional.

I think Varazda was the closest to having facets, but his main one was prickly and offputting and the other one annoyingly solicitous so blegh on the whole thing. I probably would have given it 3 stars if I wasn't so unhappy with the way the mains actually got together.

I need to stop reading books where the main genre is romance. ( )

This book is so good. SO GOOD! I want to shake everyone and make them read it right now, because I loved it so much. Terrifically written, with beautiful, smooth writing. The alt-Mediterranean world pulls you in with its unobtrusive rich worldbuilding and makes you want to learn more about it.

It deals with trauma, gender, relationships, and doesn’t shy away from it, too – dregs up all the gnarly stuff out of our heroes and makes them deal with it, but not unkindly. It’s also hilarious.

At first, I was a bit unsure about Damiskos as the protagonist. After all, Varazda pulls attention to himself effortlessly, what with his hair, and dancing, and being a spy. Compared to him, Damiskos seemed like a total square. But I needn’t have worried; Damiskos blossomed into a wonderfully complex character who easily made a worthy pair to Varazda.

I don’t even know what to say except for clapping hands emojis. Here, have three: 👏👏👏 ( )
