Once she is outside the camp one of the major threats in addition to the magical creatures is the cold, all pervasive and inescapable. I could feel the chill of it, especially at one point when it is so cold their breath crystallizes as they speak! I enjoyed this book and would recommend it to people who are looking for fantasy with grounding in the real world. Orton describes some of the hard truths of the camp without getting overly dark, and the blend of fantasy and historical fiction makes for a good way to explore a difficult topic. At times the pace slackened off and the story started to feel a bit directionless, but overall a solid read with a unique tale to tell.
