"A magical island. A dangerous task. A burning secret. Linus Baker leads a quiet, solitary life. At forty, he lives in a tiny house with a devious cat and his old records. As a Case Worker at the Department in Charge Of Magical Youth, he spends his days overseeing the well-being of children in government-sanctioned orphanages. When Linus is unexpectedly summoned by Extremely Upper Management he's given a curious and highly classified assignment: travel to Marsyas Island Orphanage, where six dangerous children reside: a gnome, a sprite, a wyvern, an unidentifiable green blob, a were-Pomeranian, and the Antichrist. Linus must set aside his fears and determine whether or not they're likely to bring about the end of days. But the children aren't the only secret the island keeps. Their caretaker is the charming and enigmatic Arthur Parnassus, who will do anything to keep his wards safe. As Arthur and Linus grow closer, long-held secrets are exposed, and Linus must make a choice: destroy a home or watch the world burn. An enchanting story, masterfully told, The House in the Cerulean Sea is about the profound experience of discovering an unlikely family in an unexpected place-and realizing that family is yours."--… (mehr)

A wonderful story. This is a delight. ( )

I've been waiting since last summer for this ebook to be free to check out from my local library! I've been checking on a regular basis, and it finally became available. Needless to say, this was a highly anticipated read for me. I also loved Klune's newer release, Under the Whispering Door. Perhaps my expectations were too high.

Linus is a bureaucratic minion who checks on the welfare of magical children in orphanages. When his dispassionate service has him sent to a top-secret facility, he discovers children with fantastical abilities that defy imagination, and cause him to question his work and his life.

I found this to be surprisingly slow to start. There's a lot of set-up, and Linus can be frustrating in his obliviousness. The book only really gets going as he gets to know the children, who are the genuine stars of the book. After a while, the book goes deep into a cozy vibe--you know what will happen, roughly, but it's an enjoyable journey, though the message of the book feels like a repeated bludgeoning, not subtle in the least. Klune writes wonderful romance--gradual, realistic, very affirming in its queer rep. By the end, I was ready to move into the house in the cerulean sea, too.

In all, it's a sweet book, if slow and heavy-handed, and I still found it well worth the wait. ( )

How cute the children are do a LOT of heavy lifting in this book, and one of these stars are solely for them. Truly love a found family of a wyvern, a gnome, a tentacle person, a sprite, a weredog, and the son of satan.

But like, this set up a society that has and is doing a LOT of truly horrible things to a lot of magical races and that draws a LOT of parallels to real world atrocities and then like...doesn't deal with any of them? The entirety of progress is that a middle aged white man realizes after 17 years that the system he is propping up is...bad? And like...while that's great and all, I don't really think it's what I want to read a whole book about. Area man realizes magical genocide is bad and love wins, news at 11. 2/5 stars for the plot as a whole. ( )

This book was just what I needed at this time of the year. It's all about found families and people who just need to be loved. Being seen for what you truly are and being loved anyway. Taking risks even when they're scary and standing up to those in charge in order to make changes. Showing that even one person can make a difference and those differences can become ripples that become waves. Highly recommend this magical ride of a book! ( )

Honestly, this book is really cheesy and predictable, but the characters are so lovable and the plot is so sweet I didn’t care.

Great example of the found families trope, adorable yet chaotic kids, a sweet, bumbling protagonist, and all told with a narrative style reminiscent of Douglas Adams. If you want something fun and heartwarming to make your day a little brighter, I recommend this book. ( )

“There are mysteries that may never be solved, no matter how hard we try. And if we spend too long trying to solve them, we may miss what’s right in front of us. The world is a weird and wonderful place. Why must we try and explain it all away?” (p. 114)
“I am but paper. Brittle and thin. I am held up to the sun, and it shines right through me. I get written on, and I can never be used again. These scratches are a history. They’re a story. Hey tell things for others s to read, but they only see the words, and not what the words are written upon. I am but paper, and though there are many like me, none are exactly the same. I am parched parchment. I have lines. I have holes. Get me wet, and I melt. Light me on fire, and I burn. Take me in hardened hands, and I crumple. I tear. I am but paper. Brittle and thin.” (p. 133)
"Don't you wish you were here?"
