When people aren't being nice to you, it is okay to play by yourself. Playing in solitude is a great thing for kids to learn about and this book is a perfect way to teach them.

When a boy believes everyone has forgotten his birthday, he decides to celebrate it on his own.
Children will experience every emotion with the main character of this easy reader—they will be sad that everyone appears to have forgotten his birthday, happily relieved when he celebrates it on his own, and thrilled when he finds he has not been forgotten after all. They will also learn that, though everything’s better with friends, one can also have fun alone. The boy wanted his friends around him, but he managed to celebrate by himself, and wore a smile the whole time. The pictures appear to have been drawn by the boy himself as he tells the story, illustrating the text though not really adding to it. They show how the boy feels, such as that he is sad his gifts are not reciprocated, but happy enough celebrating alone. It’s unique in showing that this is possible, and perhaps allows the fostering of the first seeds of independency. ( )
