The central theme of the volume is the symbolic representation of the Self, whose traditional historical equivalent is the figure of Christ.

del sí-mismo, cuyo equivalente histórico y tradicional
es la figura de Cristo. Y el profesor Jung demuestra su
tesis investigando las Allegoriae Christi, especialmente
el simbolismo del pez y los símbolos gnósticos y
alquímicos, que considera fenómenos de asimilación
cultural: se examinan cuidadosamente el aspecto
astrológico del símbolo del pez y, en particular, las
profecías del Anticristo. Por otra parte, los capítulos
sobre el yo, la sombra y el animus y el anima
constituyen una valiosa integración de los conceptos
clave del sistema junguiano.

Carl Gustav Jung (1875-1961) colaboró con Sigmund
Freud y fue presidente, hasta 1914, de la Asociación
Psicoanalítica Internacional, así como profesor de las
universidades de Zurich (1935-1942) y Basilea (1944
1946). Como estudio del arquetipo del sí-mismo, Aion
es un complemento de Arquetipos e inconsciente
colectivo y Psicología y simbólica del arquetipo, ambas

Esta es la segunda parte del volumen 9 de las obras recopiladas, siendo la primera parte Archetypes and the Collective Unconscious (lo mejor de las obras de Jung que he leído aún), esperaba que fuera un poco más emocionante de lo que era. Se ocupa principalmente del análisis de las proyecciones arquetípicas históricas del yo, que involucra a los junguianos acostumbrados en la mitología, la religión, la alquimia, la herejía, la literatura, etc. Lo cual es interesante, por supuesto, pero más de lo mismo de lo que obtenemos en parte I, una extensión de su teoría, aunque más difícil de entender y más detallada.

Dicho esto, es muy difícil encontrar un libro que contenga la misma información expertamente sintetizada de tantas fuentes variadas como esta, y vale la pena esforzarse más para comprenderlo.
Una vez que el lector ha terminado el libro, y lo entendió, entonces toda la historia mundial de la cultura debería parecer más pequeña y más grande al mismo tiempo, condensada y expandida, contextualizada y extrañamente casi inevitable o inevitable, con todo siendo una variación, extensión o contrapunto de uno de los temas trascendentes que Jung ha anatomizado aquí (o en uno de sus otros volúmenes).

This being the second part of volume 9 of the collected works, with the first part being the Archetypes and the Collective Unconscious (the best of Jung's works I have read yet), I was expecting this to be a bit more exciting than it was. It is concerned mainly in analysing the historical archetypal projections of the self, which involves the usual Jungian delve into mythology, religion, alchemy, heresy, literature, etc. Which is interesting of course, but just more of the same of what we get in part I, an extension of his theory, albeit harder to understand and more detailed. That said, it is very difficult to find a book that contains quite as much expertly synthesised information from as many varied sources as this, and it is worth putting the extra effort in that comprehending it requires. Once the reader has finished the book, and understood it, then the entire world history of culture should seem both smaller and bigger at the same time, condensed and expanded, contextualised, and strangely almost inevitable or unavoidable, with everything being a variation, extension, or counter point of one of the transcendent themes that Jung has anatomised here (or in one of his other volumes). It puts the human mind in an analogous position to a stone being thrown into a lake, where the ripples are the history of human religious and superstitious thought, caused not by any will of the stone, but as a result of how the mind has been fashioned and propelled by higher forces, by the stream of evolution and time which smoothened it, and the hand of consciousness which propelled it. This isn't an easy book to read, but will be of general use to students of literature, history, theology, and anthropology, and though Jung isn't taught at undergrad level usually, it should be of interest to psychologists, though they would probably benefit more from some of the less opaque volumes.
