A selection of some of the finest metaphysical and love poetry ever written. My favourites include 'The Broken Heart', 'The Message', 'The Anniversary', 'The Triple Fool', 'The Bait' and 'Air and Angels', and there are choice lines in many of the other selections. However, this collection (compiled by Phoenix) suffers from the absence of the 'No man is an island' sermon, including the famous line "Never send to know for whom the bell tolls; It tolls for thee" later used by Hemingway. ( ) For the majority of this slim volume of poetry,I liked the writing style (I like to read it the beautifully written lines out loud) but the poems were complicated and non-interesting to me. Then I came to the last section. I truly loved John Donne’s Holy Sonnets. There was something so personal and real about his discussions with God. I could relate on a personal spiritual level. In the end, I think John Donne is a poet to be reread and reread because there is so much there. more Zeige 2 von 2 keine Rezensionen | Rezension hinzufügen
Go and catch a falling star.Get with child a mandrake root.Tell me, where all the past years are.Or who cleft the devil's foot.Teach me to hear mermaids singing.Or to keep off envy's stinging. And findWhat windServes to advance an honest mind.--from "Song (Go and Catch a Falling Star)" From "The Flea," a sly and witty sonnet of seduction, to his celestial and holy "A Hymn to Christ," John Donne's poems capture both love and death, earthly and heavenly passion. Here are his most beautiful songs and sonnets; elegies and epithalamiums (poems in honor of a bride and groom); satires, verse letters, and poems of the Divine--a portrait of Donne's range and magnificence. These more than 65 works include "The Good-Morrow," "Airs and Angels," "A Nocturnal View on St. Lucy's Day," "The Bait," and "Upon the Annunciation and Passion."
