NATIONAL BESTSELLER A top journalist crosses the yellow tape to investigate a shocking high-society crime. Billionaires, philanthropists, socialites . . . victims. Barry and Honey Sherman appeared to lead charmed lives. But the world was shocked in late 2017 when their bodies were found in a bizarre tableau in their elegant Toronto home. First described as murder-suicide -- belts looped around their necks, they were found seated beside their basement swimming pool -- police later ruled it a staged, targeted double murder. Nothing about the case made sense to friends of the founder of one of the world's largest generic pharmaceutical firms and his wife, a powerhouse in Canada's charity world. Together, their wealth has been estimated at well over $4.7 billion.   There was another side to the story. A strategic genius who built a large generic drug company -- Apotex Inc. -- Barry Sherman was a self-described workaholic, renowned risk-taker, and disruptor during his fifty-year career. Regarded as a generous friend by many, Sherman was also feared by others. He was criticized for stifling academic freedom and using the courts to win at all costs. Upset with building issues at his mansion, he sued and recouped millions from tradespeople. At the time of his death, Sherman had just won a decades-old legal case involving four cousins who wanted 20 percent of his fortune.   Toronto Star investigative journalist Kevin Donovan chronicles the unsettling story from the beginning, interviewing family members, friends, and colleagues, and sheds new light on the Shermans' lives and the disturbing double murder. Deeply researched and authoritative, The Billionaire Murders is a compulsively readable tale of a strange and perplexing crime.… (mehr)

On December 15, 2017, a realtor leading clients through the home of Barry and Honey Sherman, discovered the bodies of the Shermans lashed to a pool railing. Barry was the owner of Apotex, a large generic drug manufacturer in Toronto. He and Honey were major philanthropists in Toronto donating millions to worthy causes as well as lending or giving other millions to friends and acquaintances who brought Barry business ideas that he felt worthy to support.

At this writing, the murders remain unsolved but Donovan who is an investigative reporter with the Toronto Star feels that the murderer or murderers knew the Sherman's routine very well. Barry did have enemies made through tough business moves.

This is definitely a fascinating murder mystery and it is not fiction. ( )

A riveting account of the mysterious deaths of Toronto billionaire couple Barry and Honey Sherman. I was completely engrossed and could not put it down. So very strange and shocking was this double murder almost 2 and half years ago and more so that it remains unsolved. Many theories abound and much in-fighting but I do hope that it will be solved and there is an explanation as to why. ( )

This an examination of the suspicious deaths of Toronto billionaires, Barry & Honey Sherman, in December 2017. The author Kevin Donovan is a Toronto investigative journalist. He begins with an account of the discovery of the bodies in the Shermans' home which actually happened when a realtor was taking potential buyers through the house. The writing then moves on to the police investigation. Interspersed with his reporting about the investigation he explores the victim's lives: their family, their business, their philanthropy,

He casts doubts on the professionalism of the Toronto police: they decided early on that it was a murder-suicide despite a lack of evidence of such. Thus, they did not explore other possible options until forced to do so by a private investigation undertaken on behalf of the family.

The biographical information about the Shermans and their lives is fascinating. While they had lots of money, they lived frugally. Barry was prone to invest money in losing ventures; who knew that he . invested in movies and craft beer start-ups? The Shermans are sympathetically portrayed.

In the end, Donovan advances some views on the identity of their killer: someone with intimate knowledge of the couple and their routine, snd that their home did not have security cameras. He dismisses the idea it was a professional killing; the set up of bodies to look like a murder-suicide was too amateurish (even though it led the Toronto police astray). This reader is left with an impression that the identity of the killer is known, but proof is so far lacking. Also, wondering about whether the Toronto police are up to the task of investigating a high-profile murder.

A good read. ( )

Not a bad read on an ongoing strange murder case. I hope there's a follow-up book once this bizarre murder is solved. ( )
