This is a meaty, but useful resource to supporting gifted children. I particularly appreciate the way this book is broken down into smaller, absorbable articles, which made the tomb less intimidating. The sections are well laid out and include social-emotional learning, creativity and advocacy, to name a few. I particularly appreciated the section on nurturing creativity, something that can fall by the wayside when academics become a central focus. Strategies aren’t just laid out, but readers are asked to reflect on how these various ideas presented in the book relate to their specific child, allowing this book to cater to each individual gifted child, whatever a family’s needs may be. This is a most comprehensive look at strategies for parenting gifted children and I would highly recommend it to anyone looking for support for or who has question about their gifted child. ( )

Don’t be scared by the size of this book - it has great information given in small chapters that are 4-7 pages in length. Each chapter focuses on specific items about gifted children and has reflection questions and helpful suggestions for making your child’s education the best it can be specifically for them. There are links, ideas, and questionnaires to help you find ways to help your kiddo. Great resource. ( )

I would recommend this book not only to parents of gifted kids, but to parents of any kid. The central philosophy boils down to meeting your kid where he/she is, encouraging and engaging interests, and looking out for ways to support through challenges. I like that it reflects current research, provides citations for if you want to dig into the information, and addresses both early and later ages. I can see myself returning to this book over the years to come. ( )

This work is a work of 391 pages of advice, strategies and something you will not be able to read in just a few days, it contains so much information and you have to let your mind take it all in in phases. Otherwise you will get information over load. It covers many different aspects of parenting a gifted child. It provides the parents with a road map to raising their child, but it also gives the parent several different routes to get their child to their best outcome, it starts when the parent first is given notice that their child if gifted and then provides answers to what the parent will face in their child's future. The work is divided into eight parts and each part is divided into several chapters, in all there are fifty four chapters each chapter is not very long, but still conveys a given point. Each chapter ends with reflection questions and then gives the references for that chapter. This work covers just about every problem that parents will face dealing with being the parent of a gifted child. The work is just $21.95 and should be made available in media centers of schools, Medical Doctor's offices, and in counselors offices of all types, But be warned, if you think, you can read it in a few days beware, you will need time for your mind to soak it all up, and you have a gifted child's entire life to read it and then reread it! Do not be intimidated by this volume! It looks like it could be a text book, but really it’s a multi-faceted handbook. The book is comprised of more than 50 articles, most less than ten pages long, making each article very accessible and readable for whatever challenge or question you may have. The articles are broken up into thematic sections such as identification, advocacy, social-emotional needs, and educational programming. It not only discusses parenting those with academic giftedness, but also those with artistic giftedness. How to well support children who have “2e,” which means twice exceptional, ie having both giftedness and another condition, such as ADHD or a learning disability.

I am blessed to be parent to two gifted daughters, and though I have only had this book a relatively short time, it has already informed my thinking about how I am parenting and relating to my girls. The article, “30 Things Gifted Kids and Their Parents Need to Know” proved a great jumping off place to encourage me in my conversations with my daughters.

Because each article is concluded with reflection questions it is also a great resource to use as a self-paced and directed study, for all of us who feel a bit out of their element when parenting their gifted children. I would also serve as a great book for a book study group of parents or teachers who want to better support students with giftedness.

I really appreciate how this reference covers how to support our gifted children from early childhood through the teenage years. I am certain I will be pulling this volume off the shelf many times over the next several years. ( )
