"Combining the social commentary of The Handmaid's Tale with the white-knuckled thrills of Red Rising, this epic space opera follows a comfort woman as she claims her agency, a soldier questioning his allegiances, and a non-binary hero out to save the solar system. First Sister has no name and no voice. As a priestess of the Sisterhood, she travels the stars alongside the soldiers of Earth and Mars-the same ones who own the rights to her body and soul. When her former captain abandons her, First Sister's hopes for freedom are dashed when she is forced to stay on her ship with no friends, no power, and a new captain-Saito Ren-whom she knows nothing about. She is commanded to spy on Captain Ren by the Sisterhood, but soon discovers that working for the war effort is so much harder to do when you're falling in love. Lito val Lucius climbed his way out of the slums to become an elite soldier of Venus, but was defeated in combat by none other than Saito Ren, resulting in the disappearance of his partner, Hiro. When Lito learns that Hiro is both alive and now a traitor to the cause, he now has a shot at redemption: track down and kill his former partner. But when he discovers recordings that Hiro secretly made, Lito's own allegiances are put to the test. Ultimately, he must decide between following orders and following his heart. A stunning and sweeping debut novel that explores the power of technology, colonization, race, and gender, The First Sister is perfect for fans of James S.A. Corey, Chuck Wendig, and Margaret Atwood"--… (mehr)

An exciting and full-bodied space opera with high stakes and multiple POVs that each managed to hold my interest equally. "The First Sister" feels similar to something like "The Expanse" series but with more queer characters and deeper explorations into themes such as personal and group identities; consent both in terms of sexual matters and body modifications; the effects of war on groups of peoples and individuals; and the ways one can choose to alter the paths they've been set on. I'm well and thoroughly hooked by the plot and am eager to finish this trilogy! ( )

I did not expect how much I would fall in love with this. I will say that it deals with some issues such as sexual assault, but the passion and unique world drew me in. Historic, Fantasy and Science Fiction all collide.

I very much enjoyed and cannot wait to read more by Linden. ( )

This was half spies and half Handmaid's Tale in space? And there is a NB protagonist but

SPOILERS BUT ALSO TRIGGER WARNING they get injured in battle and wake up to find that military brass has non-consenually preformed surgery on them to make them into a female spy? END SPOILERS

It was sort of stressful to read tbh, and I never really got to like the First Sister. ( )

Enjoyed this science fiction tale set in our future solar system, with factions from the various planets at odds over technology, religion, and self-determinance. The story took a bit of time to get up to speed, introducing all the main characters and their backstories, but once things started happening, events and action came quickly. The queer elements are integral to the story, and are so thoroughly and deftly weaved in that they feel very natural and elemental. Looking forward to the next book in the trilogy. ( )

DNF. I didn't buy into the characters, the politics, or the combat. The narrative styles felt forced. I made it about 70% and just couldn't do it anymore. ( )

"Lewis’s lush prose creates an immersive, richly textured world with complex social dynamics and solid LGBTQ and multicultural representation."
