"A romance writer who no longer believes in love and a literary writer stuck in a rut engage in a summer-long challenge that may just upend everything they believe about happily ever afters. Augustus Everett is an acclaimed author of literary fiction. January Andrews writes bestselling romance. When she pens a happily ever after, he kills off his entire cast. They're polar opposites. In fact, the only thing they have in common is that for the next three months, they're living in neighboring beach houses, broke, and bogged down with writer's block. Until, one hazy evening, one thing leads to another and they strike a deal designed to force them out of their creative ruts: Augustus will spend the summer writing something happy, and January will pen the next Great American Novel. She'll take him on field trips worthy of any rom-com montage, and he'll take her to interview surviving members of a backwoods death cult (obviously). Everyone will finish a book and no one will fall in love. But as the summer stretches on, January discovers a gaping plot hole in the story she's been telling herself about her own life, and begins to wonder what other things she might have gotten wrong, including her ideas about the man next door"--… (mehr)

I was immediately attracted to this book because of the title, the cover, the premise, all of it. I was excited for another romance that would put me in the summer mood, even though summer is radically different now. I really enjoyed this book and it met my expectations. I liked that the book wasn't just a romance and that it read more like a general fiction book. I loved the characters, from their names to their personalities. I honestly couldn't put it down. I highly recommend this book to anyone looking for a beach read as we continue to quarantine. It will make you feel those good summer, romantic vibes, even from the safety of your own living room or backyard. ( )

I attempted this one but it was too sloppily done to finish. ( )

This book was so highly recommended over and over and over again for more than a year. Often, when this happens, it is hard for a book to live up to the hype. Unfortunately, I did not enjoy this one very much.

Do you like books where are the protagonists refuse to read letters addressed to them? Refuse to answer phone calls? Refuse to ask basic questions that would end their suffering and confusion over another person‘s actions? These particular devices are some of my greatest pet peeves. This had every single one of those plus more. It makes me crazy when people don’t take the very small actions available to them to resolve issues.

I also found the protagonist pretty hard to take. She had an edge to her that made her pretty unlikable in my opinion. Combine that with a very treacly outlook on life that I guess reflects the romance writer that she is and I just found this difficult to get through.

I know a lot of people liked this book. I know that other people are not as triggered by these pet peeves as I am, so I definitely would say it’s not for me, but I can understand why other people might like it. ( )

It was okay, but apart from the title, I wouldn't call it a "beach read." The lack of love for this book is on me - I was expecting something a little more light-hearted, and clearly the publishing company's marketing ploy worked. ( )

Zero Stars! Another entry in my quest for a readable light summer book. This was the worst one yet. Sloppy writing, glaring editorial mistakes, and two so-called protagonists who were just not likeable. The search continues
