A peaceful cat who refuses to kill mice finds a home in the library.  But then a mouse finds the librarian's stash of cheese - how can Copy Cat rid the library of it?  Clever mystery... and hopefully it teaches children why no food is allowed in the library.  Fun pictures suit the story wonderfully.  Not for the littlest tots; more like ages 5 up. Clarence is a principled cat who refuses to harm another living creature, even a mouse. Unfortunately, every shop he tries to take up residence in wants a mouser. At last Clarence finds a cozy home with Mr. Spanner in the public library -- that is, until a wintry cold day when a mouse comes into the library. Will Clarence's welcome be worn out if he doesn't catch the mouse?

This is a cute tale about a cat trying to find a home where he can live by his principles. The illustrations are fun, with the strangely elongated cat working rather well. The illustrations depict very vivid reactions from the cat, which is an especially nice touch given that not all of those emotions are expressly stated in the text.

While I enjoyed this book, there isn't really a lot to say about it. It's not the best children's literature I ever read it, but it's also nowhere near the worst. It's sweet without being saccharine and you could pull a moral out of it, or you can just let kids read it for the story and characters. ( )

Cute story here about a library cat that stuck by its no-mouse-killing principles and found a place where it felt welcome and needed. ( )

Clarence the Copy Cat is a very cute story about a cat whose parents were great mousers and Clarence had no interest in going after mice and he was disowned by his parents as well as the owner of the restaurant they inhabited. After much searching Clarence winds up being adopted by a librarian and Clarence was happy that he could see no mice. However, during the winter, the mice come around and Clarence attempts to find every possible way to keep the mice away and avoid getting kicked out by Mr. Spanner. At some point, Clarence attempted to stop Mr. Spanner from going after a mouse and jumped; bumping into Mr. Spanner and landed on an open photocopier which started flashing and blinded him. When Clarence finally got off the copier he looked about and there was no mouse and when Clarence peeked under the machine from where the mouse came from was a scary picture of a very large cat.

Age appropriatness: primary
This book is a great example of fantasy because it is a story of a cat who does not like to hurt, chase or catch mice and has a hard time finding a home to stay in. The theme of this book is honoring who you are even under pressure by society to conform to their expectations.
The media in this book is pencil. ( )

For our son, Benjahmin, who is as strongly principled as Clarence. And with a nod of admiration to John Kovacs, who knows what truly makes a good home. -- P.L.

Clarence's mother and father were the best mousers Sam's Sandwich Shop had ever had. They spent all their time catching mice. Clarence did not. He was a peaceful cat.
