This book is all about the Nile crocodile specifically and how the female crocodiles lay eggs and protect them. The whole books leads up to the babies being hatched while it leads the reader to wonder why the mother crocodile won't hunt or eat anything. Once the babies are born, the mother carries them in her mouth to water to eat her first meal since she laid the eggs and the babies eat insects and small frogs while resting on her back. ( ) A large Nile crocodile lies in the sand and listens as other animals, some of them quite tasty, pass by. Why does this hungry crocodile only listen? A monitor lizard starts scratching the sand, and we discover the reason: a nest of crocodile eggs, almost ready to hatch. Striking images portray the animals with naturalistic detail, and brief sentences (up to eight per page) describe their behavior with bursts of onomatopoeia. Plenty of good drama and art here to entertain reptile lovers (and the rest of us!) Plus a nice appendix of facts about the hatching and hunting habits of Nile crocodiles.
