All of England thinks Phillip Camden a monster--a man who deliberately caused the deaths of his squadron. But as nurse Arabelle Denler watches the so-dubbed "Black Heart" every day, she sees something far different: a hurting man desperate for mercy. And when their paths twist together and he declares himself her new protector, she realizes she has her own role to play in his healing. Phillip Camden would have preferred to die that day with his squadron rather than be recruited to the Admiralty's codebreaking division. The threats he receives daily are no great surprise and, in his opinion, well deserved. What comes as a shock is the reborn desire to truly live that Arabelle inspires in him. But when an old acquaintance shows up and seems set on using him in a plot that has the codebreakers of Room 40 in a frenzy, new affections are put to the test.… (mehr)

Wow! Roseanna White has done it again. She has crafted a book full of heartbreak and history that I couldn't put down. On Wings of Devotion has lived up to White's previous books.
I loved this book because of White's talent at crafting characters who grow and learn throughout the whole book, never staying the same. The change is so slight that the characters don't even realize it until they look back to where they were before. Even the villian was likable in the fact that White showed her inner struggles.
Another part of this book that was unique was the history. Unlike most historical novels, this book was set in Europe during the height of the First World War. It makes for an exciting novel.
I enjoyed this novel and am eagerly awaiting White's next book.

My Review of On Wings of Devotion by Roseanna M. White
Everytime I hear that another Roseanna M White book is coming out I dream about reading. You see, her books are so marvelous, they tug you into the story and leave impression every time, no matter if it is a lesson in the plot, a character, or anything else, White has a way of showing you a world somewhat lost in history. On Wings of Devotion is no exception, as a matter of fact it is her best yet, though I say that every book of hers I read.
Phillip, or rather to most Black Heart, is something of a broken glutton for punishment waiting for death to come until he meets Arabelle and then the story steps into another dimension of a wonderful plot. Every aspect of this second book in the Codebreakers series is thoroughly researched, emotionally reaching, and romantically shown.
Recommendation: 16/19 up.
Verse: Colossians 1:14 In whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins. (King James Version)
Rating: 5 stars, would give more if possible.
Disclaimer: I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from the author. All views expressed are only my honest opinion. ( )

London, 1918. Arabelle Denler is a nurse working in a London hospital; Phillip Camden is an airman now working for British Intelligence (alongside characters from The Number of Love). Arabelle knows Camden by sight and by reputation; he finds out about her when he learns his sister is in love with Arabelle’s fiancé.

I enjoyed Arabelle and Camden’s interactions with each other, especially once they start to get to know each other. I didn’t like the antagonist’s contribution to this narrative. There’s quite enough tension without her, between the dangers of wartime London and the protagonists’ respective issues -- Arabelle has a complicated relationship with her father and has reasons for having agreed to marry a man she doesn’t love. Camden, the sole survivor of his squadron, suspects he will be officially blamed for his men’s deaths sooner or later, and has reasons for keeping quiet everything he knows about the incident.

All things considered, what I enjoyed about this story certainly outweighed what I didn’t.

“You’ll not dissuade me, Arabelle. I’ve made up my mind, so just resign yourself to an escort.”
“I don’t need a… a guard dog!” She moved to sidestep him the other direction and, as soon he shifted to compensate, darted around him on the first.
He was at her side within a step. “Woof.”
It was anger simmering. It had to be. She couldn’t let it be amusement, couldn’t let it be gratitude, and certainly couldn’t let it be hope.

On Wings of Devotion by Roseanna M. White has Arabelle Denler working as a nurse at Charring Cross Hospital in London of February of 1918. The young ladies volunteering at the hospital gather each evening to watch Phillip “Black Heart” Camden walk from the Admiralty building where he works to his residence. Many people believe Phillip should still be in prison for what he did to his squadron. It does not help that Phillip receives threats daily from the wife of one of the deceased pilots. Phillip’s mother comes to London needing his assistance. It seems his sister, Cassandra has gotten herself into a pickle with a fellow. He would like to marry her, but he is already betrothed. Phillip decides to intervene in his own unique way and meets the heiress Arabelle Denler. Phillip becomes Arabelle’s protector and Arabelle realizes she is meant to help him heal. Philip is surprised when a woman approaches him one day outside the Admiralty. He can tell she is up to something, and it is up to Phillip to uncover the truth. On Wings of Devotion is the second novel in The Codebreakers series. It can be read as a standalone if you have not read The Number of Love featuring Margot De Wilde. Arabelle Denler and Phillip Camden are great characters. Arabelle is a Christian woman who believes God put Phillip in her life for a reason. Phillip wishes he died with the rest of his squadron in The Incident (as he calls it). He is a strong man with a big heart. You can tell that Phillip loves his family and will do what it takes to help them. He also has a fun-loving side which rarely comes out. The two of them complement each other which makes for an entertaining story. The author has a wonderful writing style which draws the reader into her story and holds them until the end. Roseanna M. White captured the time period and made me feel that I was there with the characters. I loved the intrigue surrounding our mystery woman and I could not wait to see how this thread would playout. I liked that Margot De Wilde and her fiancé (from The Number of Love) are in the story along with Barclay Pearce and his family from Shadows Over England series. On Wings of Devotion is a story of forgiveness and redemption. The author combined romance, humor, mystery and intrigue along with complex characters into one entertaining story. ( )

What a book! Roseanna M. White has done it once more with another amazing story. From the very beginning you are sucked in, unable to break away.

Arabelle and Camden... where do I even begin? Roseanna writes in such a way you can't help but fall in love with her characters. The depth to all of them. I wanted to be best friends with Arabelle, she is such an amazing person and so inspiring. I found myself reflecting on my own life while reading their story. I want to be just as forgiving, just as good as Arabelle. And getting to know more about Camden was a wonderful journey.

The Faith content Roseanna puts in her books is fantastic. And the humor! I just loved all of Arabelle's and Camden's witty comments. So many good quotes from this story!

Getting to know more about the people who worked in Room 40 was great. I love all the history Roseanna puts in her books. Though it wasn't as strong in this story as in her others, it was there. The details she adds makes it feel like you are really there.

The mystery element was intriguing and kept you guessing as to what was going to happen next? What were they planning?

As you can tell I loved this faith filled story, showing forgiveness and second chances. It inspired you to have a deeper prayer life with God. To draw from His strength and not count on your own.

I could not put this book down. It is 381 pages long and I read all but the last 80 pages in one day. In one sitting. It was just so good.

I received this book for my honest review. ( )
