Stuart J. Murphy travels all over the UnitedStates talking to thousands of kids. And you'll never believe what they talk about: MATH! Stuart shows kids that they use math every day -- to share a pizza, spend their allowance, even sort socks. Stuart writes funny stories about math -- and if you read his books, you'll start to see the fun in math, too. Hamster Champs With a few blocks, a board, and a protractor to measure the angles, the hamster champs have built a ramp that lets them fly high! But will this stunt be good enough to outwit Hector the cat?… (mehr)

Hamster Champs try to perfect their stunt in order to not get eaten by Hector the cat. The hamsters uses tools, such as a protractor, in order to create to perfect angles to escape the cats.

This book is a fictional math book that could be used for upper primary to intermediate grades. This book is an informational concept book. This is a level 3 MathStart book on the mathematical concept of angles.
In this book, the hamster champs have been allowed out of their cage by Hector the cat, only if they can impress him with their stunts. Hector says that so long as they perform an impressive jump, they won't be his afternoon snack. The hamsters gather a toy car, a board, some blocks, and a protractor for their jumps. They set up jumps at increasing angles of difficulty, measuring each one, trying to impress the cat. But Hector isn't impressed, so they find an angle that will launch them back into their cage.
This is a good informational concept book because although it has fictional characters and actions, the concept embedded is real and educational. The hamster champs illustrate each angle they jump with a protractor.
This book could be used to introduce angles in a math lesson.
This book could be used to introduce all of the ways one can use a protractor in real life and to teach that there are angles everywhere.

Three hamsters want to prove to a cat that they can launch their car and if they can then the cat will not chase them. They lean their ramp at many different angles to see how far their car will go. This mathematical book helps children learn about angles.

This book is about three hamsters and a cat that are left home alone. The hamsters talk the cat into letting them get out of their cage to show the cat a trick. the cat tells them that as long as their trick is good he will not chase them. the hamsters make different ramps from different angle and race the car down them. this book is good if a teacher is teaching a geometry lesson. students can measure angles, hold a tube at the specific angle and drop a marble or gumball down the tube and see at which angle does the ball go the furthest.

Hamster Champs is a fun book that introduces the concepts of measuring angles, using protractors, estimating trajectory and distance by weaving these math and physics concepts into a short adventure of hamsters versus the family cat. The hamsters have to use their noggins to get past the cat and back to safety. ( )
