A fascinating and in-depth look at the rise of Instagram, from concept, to growth, to acquisition by Facebook, to the influential tech behemoth it is today in 2020. Based on hundreds of interviews conducted by the author this is a great read for anyone interested in understanding the cultural phenomenon that is Instagram Fantastic telling of the story of Instagram’s beginnings, and then it slowly being subsumed into the culture of Facebook after its acquisition. Seems like Frier had great access and she tells the story very clearly, with apparently no axe to grind, but without pulling any punches. Great explanation of the dynamics that drive Facebook, Twitter and Instagram itself, and how they conflict with the users interests and produce environments that are engineered for growth but are deeply toxic.
