This is a slightly fictionalized account of Dr. Mary Cleave and other "firsts" in the U.S. space program. This graphic novel uses humor to talk about the first mixed gender class of astronauts at NASA and some of frustrations and successes of the women in NASA's program. NASA has to catch up to the soviets who sent the first woman into space - Valentia Tereshkova. Mary Cleave's interest in space and her path to the space programs is a great story - glad to see girls about to read and see what's possible. ( ) Content was interesting, but it took me a while to get through this graphic nonfiction. I struggled reading the font during the cosmonaut section a bit. A look at the struggle to get the first women astronauts hired by NASA, trained, and actually included on space missions. The book took a deeper dive into the experiences of Valentina Tereshkova and Mary Cleave. But also looked more generally at some of the many challenges women faced. And the way an all male organization had to adapt, adjust, and evolve to incorporate the talents of those who had been historically excluded. This is a book about the inside details about the first woman in space. The artwork in this book are amazing and are very capturing to the eye. The format is that of a comic book which is great for young kids to learn aswell. I highly recommend this book for young girls who want to know more about what woman have accomplished. This book is based on the adventure of how Valentina Tereshkova became the first woman to fly in space. It is an inspirational story that can have such an impact on many young women today. It shows that anyone can do anything if we put our minds to it and that our gender doesn't define what w can and can't do. keine Rezensionen | Rezension hinzufügen

"The U.S. may have put the first man on the moon, but it was the Soviet space program that made Valentina Tereshkova the first woman in space. It took years to catch up, but soon NASA's first female astronauts were racing past milestones of their own. The trail-blazing women of Group 9, NASA's first mixed gender class, had the challenging task of convincing the powers that be that a woman's place is in space, but they discovered that NASA had plenty to learn about how to make space travel possible for everyone."--Front flap.
