Quotes ...I still believed that my calling would feel like being tapped on the shoulder by God. It would take me several years to realize that a calling can become clear in the doing. (23) I hate standardized tests - they mislead in demonstrating students' skills, invalidate perfectly intelligent young people, and mostly test a body of knowledge that is white, straight, middle- or upper-class, and not representative of the majority of students I've taught. (80) Like many well-intentioned white folks, I confused "There are more people of color here than I'm used to!" with "This is a truly diverse group of people that is not mostly white, nor solely supervised by white people." (100) All of us can only be somewhat free in a racist society. (116) The long hours, the long commute, the lack of materials, the sharing of space, these are all problems that most adjuncts have, and none of us can always avoid passing them on to our own [students]. (190) My experience teaching at the secondary level, as well as hearing about my students' experience there, has convinced me that American high schools are often not actively helping students mature. (224) I try to keep myself on the same side of the battle as my students and to look for ways to support their growth instead of becoming another force aligned against them. (232) We're glad you're here, we say to our students. We're going to change you, you're going to change us. None of us will walk out of here the same.
