In 1885 a twenty-four year old Moravian missionary and his bride set out for the Kuskokwim River where they hoped to help found Alaska's first Moravian mission. They planned to work among the Yup'ik Eskimos of western Alaska, about whom they hoped for much but knew very little. Thirty-seven yers later Edith Kilbuck set sail down the Kuskokwim for the last time. Her husband, John Henry, had died at Akiak earlier that year. With his death ended a period in the history of western Alaska fraught with the drama and conflict attending a cultural transformation in which the Kilbucks had played no small part.
