"Twins Alec and Walker Holland have a reputation around town. One is quiet and the other is the life of any party, but the two are inseparable. For their last summer before college, Alec and Walker leave the city to live with their rural cousins, where they find that the swamp holds far darker depths than they could have imagined. While Walker carves their names into the new social scene, Alec recedes into a summer-school laboratory, slowly losing himself to a deep, dark experiment. This season, both brothers must confront truths, ancient and familial, and as their lives diverge, tensions increase and dormant memories claw to the surface"--… (mehr)

I enjoyed the colorful, stylized artwork and the twins, but I didn’t care for the story or the dialogue. I’m still wondering why Abby fell for Alec. Like, seriously why? Without the plant stuff, he’s bland. The ending was just too much. It didn’t feel earned, and it was way too abrupt.

I received a copy of this book for free from the publisher (DC Comics) for promotional purposes.

I’m a big fan of DC’s graphic novels for young adults line and this novel was a great addition to the lineup. I’m not really familiar with Swamp Thing, so I didn’t have any particular expectations going into it.

As for the storyline, there really isn’t much of a plot. It’s more of a character study that serves as an original story for Swamp Thing. If you’re looking for an exciting superhero read, this book isn’t it. The majority of the novel focuses on the twins and their relationship. There is a lot of exploration of their feelings and emotions towards themselves and each another, which I enjoyed.

However, the ending did feel rushed and abrupt. It ended suddenly and with little closure. I would have liked to seen it fleshed out more.

The best part of the book was definitely the illustrations. The artwork is stunning, especially the drawings involving plants. There’s an ethereal, almost horror-like quality to some of the depictions.

Overall, I recommend this graphic novel for those looking to read a different kind of superhero comic. ( )

Its weird that swamp thing mostly works as a YA comic, but it does. The chunky artwork is colorful and conveys what it needs to. It never reaches the highs of John Totelben from the original Swamp Thing but it still works. Alec is not very likeable in this rendition if I'm being honest. He's prickly, easy to anger, and makes some really dumb decisions. I really enjoyed the romance in this one, and maybe it was more important by setting up Alec as an unlikeable character for so long that it feels like a reprieve for him when he finally sees a little bit of happiness. There's definitely potential here but it will rely on Alec becoming more likeable in the next one. ( )

I was interested in this because I love Maggie. It was fine, kind of sad, with an abrupt ending I didn’t completely understand. I liked the color scheme for the artwork but wasn’t madly in love with how everything was drawn. ( )
