Per molti, Roald Dahl è semplicemente l'autore di Charlie e la fabbrica di cioccolato, o peggio ancora del film tratto da quel famoso libro. Sì, nel film gli altri ragazzini finiscono in situazioni un po' preoccupanti, ma nulla di grave. Il guaio almeno per un pauroso come me è che in genere nei suoi racconti (qui riuniti in un unico volume) Dahl è troppo bravo a creare un'atmosfera davvero creepy. Dopo la sua prima raccolta - che stranamente non è quella con cui parte il libro - che è più autobiografica e legata alla seconda guerra mondiale, Dahl comincia a creare ambientazioni che sembrano quasi reali, tipicamente con qualcuno che cerca di truffare qualcuno oppure una coppia ormai in crisi; avvinghia il lettore e aggiunge particolari del tutto inverosimili ma che almeno a me fanno paura. La costruzione della storia è sicuramente il suo punto forte, fino a raggiungere un climax che non è necessariamente espresso, vedi per esempio "Nunc dimittis". Devo dire che i tanti traduttori dei vari racconti hanno fatto un ottimo lavoro per armonizzare lo stile, cosa che non è affatto scontata! ( )

I took me a long time to finish this book. I've read it over a couple of years, mainly during Christmas holidays, reading it one story at a time. Because I felt when I started it, that if I were to read them all at once, I would quickly stop enjoying it. Roald Dahl is indeed master of the 'twist in the tale', but after a while you start expecting a twist and you start searching for them. So for me reading them over a long period of time was better then reading them consecutively. ( )

Dahl is en blijft een meesterverteller en zijn korte verhalen laten dat goed zien. Vreemde personages, absurde omstandigheden en onverwachte plotwisselingen. Absoluut een aanrader! ( )
