Aimee Leduc, electronic security expert, finds herself intimately connected to a murder. She receives a mysterious phone call telling her where to discover a surprise, and that surprise is a baby, almost on her doorstep. In trying to track down the mother, Aimee learns of the death of a young woman not far from her home, and finds herself mixed up with a group of protestors.

The protestors are trying to get the French government to not accept a contract with a company responsible for environmental destruction. Aimee names the baby Stella and does her best to keep her safe while she digs further into the environmental group in hopes of locating the mother - or confirming that the mother is the dead woman. Aimee's professional duties mix with personal as she finds herself falling in love.

Enjoyable mystery with a bit of a surprise ending, memorable characters, straightforward writing. The author is a Francophile who lives in San Francisco. We can deduce that she is not French from the descriptions of French customs and locations, clearly meant for those unfamiliar. ( )

It was a loaner that I took on a flight. I am a fan of Paris, but not of the flat cliched tone of the book. The endless label dropping was a little weird. (Her fuchsia agent provocateur bra got wet!) ( )

Pretty weak stuff. The plot never really coheres, which is a big flaw in a murder mystery. Black's prose isn't strong enough to convey the kind of atmosphere which one would expect from something set largely on the Île Saint-Louis. Peppering sentences with Parisian streetnames doesn't do much by itself to help the reader conjure up an image of the setting. Moreover, Black indulges in one of my pet peeves—a reader suspends disbelief when reading an English-language novel set in a non-Anglophone novel, understanding that all the characters are really 'speaking' French or Latin or Xhosa or what have you when their dialogue is presented in English. To do as Black does here, and have characters say 'Bonjour' or talk about 'watching something on the télé' before continuing the conversation in English breaks that suspension of disbelief. And honestly, if sprinkling your dialogue with such basic French is the best technique your novel has for creating atmosphere, you need to go back to the drawing board. ( )

I hated this book. It was implausible and silly. Reading it right up against The Sandman made the contrast between formulaic and absurd mystery books all the more stark

Great mystery - interesting characters, good plot, taste of "real" Paris. ( )
