The first many pages describes Kwanzaa and goes on to tell about slaves in the "New World," which becomes the United States. From there it describes the seven symbols of Kwanzaa. The final two pages list the principles and give concise definitions of each one. Kwanzaa is an informational story for children. The book displays the reason for Kwanzaa as Dr. Maulena Kerenga came up with in 1966. The book tells of the history of Blacks, as they were taken from Africa and enslaved for 200 years. The book takes us througn the entire celebration of Kwanzaa. There are seven days and the celebration ends January 1st. The book gives an explaination of the symbolism of Kwanzaa, and how the bendera came about. As the book takes us throught the steps of Kwanzaa there are also phrases in Swahili of the seven principles the children explain each day of Kwanzaa. “Kwanzaa” Written by A.P. Porter – Illustrated by Janice Lee Porter It is a book describing the African American holiday, Kwanzaa. It explains the important principles of the belief, as well as explaining how to celebrate it. I think it was wise to include a glossary because of the amount of new words. The art made the information easier to understand, as well as more memorable.
