Commander Whitney has ordered Dallas to investigate a fellow police officer after his death. There is a report that Frank Wojinski made a buy of illegals before his death. She will not be able to use Feeney as he had partnered with Frank in the past, so she turns to Roarke when she needs e-help.

Her investigation quickly takes a turn to the bizarre when Dallas discovers that Frank was running an off-books investigation of a Satanist cult.

Action, romance, and mystery you can't ask for better in a good book. ( )

Death surrounded her. She faced it daily, dreamed of it nightly. Lived with it always.

Eve and the gang are back again for more death, sex, lies, crime, and Bad Times in New York®.

I liked the previous books so I liked this one too. Eve is great, and her character development in each book is really fascinating to read. But, like my previous critiques, I think the abrupt endings really diminish that development.

I remember another view mentioning that in each book Eve always ends up initially arresting the wrong person, despite behind hailed the best homicide detective in the city. And I have to agree that that doesn't make much sense to me. Eve is smart. She connects things way before everyone else. She works harder than any other character. She's passionate and driven and has a disgust for injustice. She believes in the badge. And somehow, she makes some pretty bad misses in terms of arrests (which are all conveniently never talked about again). Also, it's very odd that this future has no lie detectors outside of psychiatric evaluations?

And please. Would someone just give the police department some money so they can actually do their job properly? How much time would be saved if vehicles weren't trash and computers weren't one byte away from overload? The whole thing doesn't really fit with the future society Roberts is peddling, especially since we know from previous books that departments in other cities are better off. Considering the plots of the books and the huge crime rate in New York, it would make sense that the police department had funding.

Trigger Warnings: rape and attempted rape, animal killings ( )

Ceremony in Death is the fifth installment in J.D. Robb's very popular futuristic mystery-romance series “In Death”. In this one Eve is forced by Commander Whitney to investigate the death of a fellow officer. This officer was observed buying illegals and the drugs were found in his system after his death. Whitney wants this investigation off the record and done without any other officers involved. Making it especially difficult for Eve is that Feeney, Eve's training officer and father figure, has has been personal friends with the victim for many years, and is godfather to his granddaughter. Before too long her investigation leads her to satanic cults, Wiccan religious groups, and more murders. The Wiccan element brings more development to Peabody's character since she knows a little about the Wiccan practices. And, of course, Roarke gets involved in the investigation as well. It seems that everyone Eve questions ends up getting killed and soon Eve herself is the target.

The attraction of this series is the mix of suspense and romance combined with a great murder mystery. There are many surprises and I really enjoy the dialogue, the depth of the characters, and the continuing characters throughout the series. All the characters are interesting, and stories are well written. As for the mystery part, often it's not too hard to guess who did it and why the person did it in the first place. Nevertheless, these books continue to keep a reader intrigued with the twists and turns of the plots and the ever developing relationship between Eve and Roarke. ( )
