The years covered are 1659-1663 and are proceeded by a useful description of the life of Pepys. Ideally readers would do well to arm themselves with a copy of the 'Samuel Pepys Companion' whilst reading the diary itself. This contains the names of those mentioned, together with places and other useful information.
The diary begins with the words "Blessed be God,at the end of the last year I was in very good health, without any sense of my old pain, but upon taking of cold. I lived in Axe Yard, having my wife, and servant Jane, and no more in family than us three."
What can I say - this is a marvelous read, albeit not an easy one. The voice of Sam Pepys is one of that select few that come down to us through the shadow of time, clear and true. ( )
