Con posterioridad, Alphonse y su hermano Ernest se marcharon a París en el año 1857, ciudad en la cual Daudet trabajó como secretario personal para el Duque de Morny, el director de "Le Figaro", en donde comenzó a escribir. El Duque le inspiraría posteriormente la novela "El nabab (Le nabab)" (1877). Su inicio en el mundo de la literatura se produjo a los 18 años, cuando publicó el libro de poemas "Las enamoradas (Les amourreuses)" (1858), continuado por uno de sus títulos más importantes, la colección de cuentos "Cartas desde mi molino (Lettres de mon moulin)" (1866), inspirados por su vivencia en tierras de la Provenza. En cuanto a su vida sentimental, Alphonse Daudet contrajo matrimonio en 1867 con la escritora Julia Allard. También participó en la Guerra Franco-Prusiana, acontecida entre 1870 y 1871. En el aspecto literario, además de novelas, encuadradas en un naturalismo empapado de lirismo, esperanza y humor, como "Jack" (1876), "Safo (Sapho)" (1884), "El inmortal (L''immortel)" (1888) o la popular trilogía de Tartarín, con "Tartarín de Tarascón (Les aventures prodigieuses de Tartarin de Tarascon)" (1872), "Tartarín en los Alpes (Tartarin sur les Alpes)" (1885) o "Port Tarascon" (1890), acometió también piezas dramáticas, como "La arlesiana (L''Arlésienne)" (1872), musicada por Georges Bizet.
