"A wickedly witty field guide to bookstore customers from the Person Who Doesn't Know What They Want (But Thinks It Might Have a Blue Cover) to the harried Parents Secretly After Free Childcare. It does take all kinds. If you visit bookshops more often than the grocery store, you'll recognize the types. There's the Expert (with subspecies from the Bore to the Helpful Person), the Young Family (ranging from the Exhausted to the Aspirational), Occultists (from Conspiracy Theorist to Craft Woman). Then there's the Loiterer (including the Erotica Browser and the Self-Published Author), the Bearded Pensioner (including the Lycra Clad), the The Not-So-Silent Traveller (the Whistler, Sniffer, Hummer, Farter, and Tutter), and the Family Historian (generally Americans who come to Shaun's shop in Wigtown, Scotland). Two bonus sections include Staff and, finally, Perfect Customer - all from Shaun Bythell (author of Confessions of a Bookseller), the funniest sell-and-tell observer in the house of books. This is the perfect read for anyone who ever felt a bookstore was home. You've been spotted! Or have you?"--… (mehr)

Several book lovers of my acquaintance directed me towards Shaun Bythell's books: he's written several successful ones, all I believe in a similar idiom. This was i the library yesterday, so reader, I borrowed it. And I didn't enjoy it all that much. It's quite clever. All his readers are classified, in the way of natural history specimens, by their Latin names. The types that can annoy him annoy me too - the compulsive sniffer, for instance. But too many categories seemed to embrace too large a section of the population and thereby attributed negative characteristics to blameless people, and the general effect was that he appears patronising and often borderline offensive. He raised a few smiles. But not many. ( )

I'm really enjoying all of the Shaun Bythell books I've read. This one I had to send the chapter on Managers to all my friends and family. A great giggle. Really priceless! ( )

This was a quick audio book at a little over two hours. The narration was good but I did have to refer back to the ebook version and reread several sections. As for the content, this was another nonfiction book written during lockdown at the height of the pandemic. One most feel some empathy for the loss of income many businesses endured during that time period, and I guess writing another book probably seemed like a good idea for another source of income to Bythell.

Bythell's assessment of the various 'types' of customers who frequented his bookshop, was a little snarky. I thought some of the characterizations were probably true and could understand being irritated by browsers who never bought anything or rude customers. Still, I never really found his descriptions to be laugh-out-loud worthy, though they were obviously meant to be. At least Bythell also had the good grace to also poke fun at different types of book owners and staff members.

Three stars for an easy reading and quasi-entertaining insight into the antiquarian book business world, but I am glad it was short one. ( )

Shaun Bythell does not pull any punches. His first book was a brutally honest look at his life as a second hand bookseller, and this little volume follows the same vein. The thing is though, even as he is ripping each of the seven types of people he finds in his shop, their foibles and behaviours, their tastes and attitudes, it is clear that he (mostly) respects and appreciates all of them, even likes some of them. And the fact that one of his classes is bookstore staff, who are also a cracked and tarnished type of folk, shows a streak of humility which is the secret to his success. The not-so-secret admiration is nicely contrasted with his acerbic insights. I wonder which type I would end up being, if I visited his store. ( )

A small bookstore owner classifies his customers into types of customers. As one would in science, he classified his customers into kinds and types with Latin names. It is truly a hilarious book. When reading, I easily imagined the customers he was describing. I'm sure many will too while reading. It was a laugh out loud read and is now a new favorite. ( )
