Star writer Mark Millar delivers Marvel's mutant heroes in a streamlined, character-rich adventure perfect for fans of their smash hit movie. Brought to life by the talented Kubert brothers, the X-Men fight for the future in this break-neck thrill-ride. Mutants, those born with strange powers, through genetic mutation, are not only hated and feared, but brutally murdered in the streets by U.S. sanctioned killing machines. Driven by a dream of peace, Professor X gathers his mutant soldiers, his X-Men, to try and bring sanity to an insane world. But can he forge his band of misfits into a strike force capable of defending the Earth from the evil Magneto and his Brotherhood and even from the very humans they seek to protect.… (mehr)

The Five Faces of Ultimate X-Men 1: The Tomorrow People

------

😍

Wonderful art by Adam and Andy Kubert is very reminiscent of Mark Bagley's similar art on Ultimate Spider-Man.

Issue #3 is where the action really starts, as the X-Men battle the Brotherhood. This is a cinematic experience that looks and feels like an X-Men movie. It's the high point of the volume.

The last two issues, #6 in particular, are pure gold. Filled with action and establishing Magneto as a truly terrifying villain. It also deals with the difficulties of either supporting mankind or wanting to wipe them out.

😃

Issue #1 is a quick introduction to the alternate X-Men universe. It feels familiar enough to keep old fans reading, but feels somewhat rushed and the timeline is a bit jumbled up.

The cinematic influences and the similarities with Grant Morrison's New X-Men give this story a polished and larger-than-life feel.

Millar has successfully updated the world the X-Men live in by referencing events and people who were hot-topic at the time. Catching those references now makes me feel old.

😐

Issue #2 continues the somewhat rushed and confusing storytelling; it's difficult to grasp who's been with the X-Men for some time and who's a new recruit.

Storm's characterization feels somewhat off; like a female version of Iceman.

Some of the dialogue is unnatural and points out obvious things. Dialogue is not Mark Millar's strong suit and it's blatantly obvious throughout the volume.

Mark Millar writes the story like it would be a continuation of earlier stories. He jumps straight into relationships and positions established a long time ago in the main canon instead of letting things take the time or figuring something new out.

A reimagining of the X-Men, which restarts the story today. I love the fact that Wolverine finally got together with Jean Grey, although thanks to his big mouth that will probably never happen again. Wolverine is sent to the X-Men by Magneto to assassinate Prof. X. Wolverine switches sides and the X-Men along with Magneto's children end up bringing Magneto down together. I loved seeing the modern take on it, although who knew Jean Grey could be such a bad girl. ( )
