This book is an enjoyable, witty read. Coll and Persephone make a great couple, which definitely keeps his mother and London on their toes. Whether running into or out of trouble, there's rarely a dull moment.

I didn't have high hopes for this hero, from the previous books he seemed a little like his problem-solving consisted entirely of trying to Hulk smash the thing. He had more dimension in this book though, and actually grew into quite an appealing character. The heroine is a talented celebrity actress, with the benefits and problems that come with it. I enjoy when heroines have work of some sort, and I liked her more as it went along. She's a strong woman without being an absolute terror, (which somehow often gets conflated with strength). Overall it's a good cast of characters.

They spend a good portion of the book in the other's company, so I felt like they got to know each other well, and the two of them seem well suited together. And it felt like they really admired the strengths in the other, and were willing to accept some of the more challenging aspects. And saw the other for who they really were. All nice things, and quite a bit beyond simple attraction (though of course they have that too).

Tropes include bodyguard, forced proximity, secret heiress, and a bit of class-difference thrown in.
I think this book could stand on its own, but the books definitely build on each other, so they're probably best read in order. And I think this ended up being my favorite.

Terrific conclusion to the series. Coll is the oldest son and the most resistant to his mother's demand that her three sons marry or risk losing the funds needed to support their Scottish estate. In the first book, It's Getting Scot in Here, she ambushed Coll with the woman she'd picked out for him. It did not go well, as Coll walked out and refused to have anything to do with her choice. A few weeks later and Lady Aldriss hasn't learned her lesson and does it again. This time, when Coll walks out, he only goes as far as the theater's backstage, where he encounters a very intriguing woman.

Persephone is wealthy, independent, and intelligent. She is also the theater troupe's lead actress and one of the most popular in London. She is frequently surrounded by men who want to be her protector, whether she agrees or not. The big Highlander who appears backstage one night intrigues her, especially after he rescues her from an overeager protector wannabe and clears a path for her to leave the theater that night. She's grateful but doesn't expect it to go any further.

I enjoyed the first meeting between Persephone and Coll. Their banter was fun, and their connection was immediate. Coll found himself back at the theater the next day instead of looking for a woman to court. Once again, the banter between them was lively, but Persephone made it clear she wasn't interested in anything more and sent him on his way. But when a suspicious accident nearly kills her, Persephone offers to help him find the right woman if he serves as a bodyguard of sorts. Coll is more than happy to spend time with her. He also takes the opportunity to make a point with his mother - he will find his own wife and tells her he has set his sights on Persephone. Of course, he knows he can't marry an actress, but he enjoys his mother's reaction.

I loved watching the relationship develop between Persephone and Coll. Neither one intends anything serious. Coll knows where his duty lies, and Persephone has no interest in marriage. However, neither can deny the sparks that fly between them. When it becomes evident that someone really is out to kill Persephone, Coll's protective instincts kick in, and nothing will stop him from keeping her safe. The more time they spend together, the deeper their connection becomes. Persephone can't help falling for the man who sees her for the woman she is, not just the roles she plays. On the other side, Persephone sees more than the giant, growly Highlander; she sees a man who cares about his people and his family. I thought they were well-matched in intelligence, and I loved their conversations.

As the attacks on Persephone intensified, Coll's determination to get to the source did too. I liked seeing Coll earn Persephone's trust so that she would share her past with him. Her history did not surprise me, but her strength and resilience were amazing. I loved seeing Coll involve first his brothers, then the rest of the family in protecting Persephone. I loved how the whole family, even Lady Aldriss, get involved in the final confrontation. I was on the edge of my seat until it was all over and the culprit vanquished.

The follow-on scenes were great as they wrapped up Coll and Persephone's story and the loose ends of the series. I loved seeing Persephone face her parents and set them straight on their place in her life. I also liked seeing Coll's parents own up to their mistakes. I would love to see a novella showing what happens next with them. ( )

The last brother finds his English bride and in so doing finds happiness in spite of upsetting his mother and a few others. That said, this was not my favorite of the trilogy and I did have trouble relating to Coll, Persephone and the plot. I didn’t feel I knew Coll or Persephone well, had trouble understanding them and their backstories, and felt that the sizzle that I would have liked between them seemed to be missing in their relationship.

The story did wrap up some of the loose ends about the parents and we did see the brothers with their partners but…all in all…it seemed a bit flat. There was a bit of a mystery about who was after Persephone and who she really was but, again, I didn’t buy into it as much as I would have liked to. I did enjoy the way Persephone’s parents were handled at the end. I guess is was just underwhelmed after hoping that Coll, who is bigger than life, would end up with a different happily ever after.

This is the last book of the Wild Wicked Highlanders series, and it brings us the story of the oldest MacTaggert brother, Coll.

Coll is a bit, like his sister Eloise likes to call him, an angry mountain. But, as most romance heroes, he has a soft heart, and is a very unselfish person.

Persephone Jones is an actress, but also more than that, and when her life is in jeopardy, Coll jumps in at the chance to help her, spend time with her, and also upset his very English mother.

What somewhat started as a pursuit of spite, turns into a lovely affair of the heart, with Coll falling in love and declaring himself to Persephone, despite his concerns regarding having here the mistress of his house, because, as he so pointedly says, “I love ye. I ken it doesn’t change a thing, you’re still an actress and I’m the oldest son of an earl (…). I have a duty, and ye have a life you’ve made for yourself. But I’ve looked for nine –weeks and longer than that in the Highlands – to find a woman with whom I’d care to spend my life, and I damned well know when I’ve found one. It’s someaught I’m willing to fight for. But not if dunnae feel the same about me.” (From Hit Me With Your Best Scot. Copyright © 2021 by Suzanne Enoch). I love this quote because it says yes, Colls loves Persephone, but he’s also giving her the opportunity to share her own feelings, no matter what they are. Because it’s only worth fighting against the world if you’re together.

We have several attempts to harm Persephone throughout the book, and I have to say, I did not see it coming until almost the end, when we found out who the person trying to harm our heroine was. Very well done plot wise.

I really enjoyed this book, it was fun to spend some time with the brothers again, and to see Lady Aldriss and Angus together for once. Maybe will get a book, or a novella about their reunion?

I also really liked that Coll admitted that Persephone absolutely loved the theatre and acting, and therefore never questioned removing her from that world after marrying her, which most of the times happens, so it was refreshing to find a hero who admitted this right away, and always said any change in profession would only be Persie’s choice.

In the end, it was an entertaining book, with a hero learning what falling in love meant for him, and what he was willing to abdicate in the name of love – because compromise, my friends, is the key to a loving, happy relationship. ( )
