Good but not great. If you want to read about this era, go with "The Grapes of Wrath" which is a masterpiece. ( )

Once again, Kristin Hannah wrote a beautiful book.

Elsa Wolcott is raised in a panhandle region of Texas in 1921. When she was 14 years old, she had rheumatic fever so her parents encouraged her to stay home where it was safe. But she wanted to explore the world and one day in her mid 20s, she created a red dress and went looking for some excitement in the small town. A young man spotted her and said she was pretty. They instantly liked each other and had a secretive affair. But things changed when her mother discovered she was pregnant.

Her parents were furious. She was taken to live with the Marteinelli family. Her parents refused to see her ever again. She would become a Catholic and marry Raffaello. His life also changed as he no longer was able to go to college and his forever girlfriend was now out of the picture. But he was willing to do what he could to make the best of the situation. The young couple had two children: Loreda and Anthony. But when times got tough with all the dust storms, the crash of 1929 and the lack of rains for crops, her husband took off leaving just a note behind.

These were not easy times for anyone - much less a woman trying to raise two kids with hardly anything to eat. There was dirt everywhere from the storms which affected their livelihood. While everyone else was headed West, Elsa didn't know which way to turn.

This is one very sad book. It's the reminder how history can repeat itself. Sometimes the author's notes are most interesting. She said, "Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine that the Great Depression would become so relevant in our modern lives, that I would see so many people out of work, in need, frightened for their future."

It's an emotional story. But a good one. ( )

*soft spoiler(s)*

This is a book that I literally couldn’t stop hearing about – it seemed like every time I opened an email in early 2021, it was touting this book. (For the stat nerds, see short list below.) Maybe it was a case of too much hype, but it just, sadly, really didn’t do it for me.

The characters had good depth and the scenes throughout the novel were well written, but the tale didn’t overpower me with emotion, which I would have expected for a story smack dab in the Dust Bowl era of the 1930’s depression and intra-country migration.

There was a ton of backstory to read through before Elsa’s story really got going (her teen years, early married life, quite a bit of time in Texas before moving to California). While I love good backstory, as it provides character motivation, in The Four Winds it merely seemed to bog down the narrative, and underscored the novel with a rambling train of thought.

I also felt let down that Elsa didn’t get any resolution with her runaway husband, which I was eagerly awaiting, but it never came.

The good news, however, is that Elsa, through her ordeal(s), finds her self-worth, beauty, and voice.

Recommended for those who love historical fiction and who are eager to know about this period of American history.

Beautiful, sad story of a family in peril during the Dust Bowl. A tragic tale in some ways, but full of hope as love helps many of the characters move forward.

This novel strikes one to the core. Yes, it is fiction, but is based on a very real period in America's history, and for me, a non-American, it was a very interesting and revealing book. To say that I enjoyed it would be a lie, but I am so pleased I read it, cried over it at times, and learned so much. A great read. ( )
