"When social worker Jax receives nine missed calls from her older sister, Lexie, she assumes that it's just another one of her sister's episodes. Manic and increasingly out of touch with reality, Lexie has pushed Jax away for over a year. But the next day, Lexie is dead: drowned in the pool at their grandmother's estate. When Jax arrives at the house to go through her sister's things, she learns that Lexie was researching the history of their family and the property. And as she dives deeper into the research herself, she discovers that the land holds a far darker past than she could have ever imagined. In 1929, thirty-seven-year-old newlywed Ethel Monroe hopes desperately for a baby. In an effort to distract her, her husband whisks her away on a trip to Vermont, where a natural spring is showcased by the newest and most modern hotel in the Northeast. Once there, Ethel learns that the water is rumored to grant wishes, never suspecting that the spring takes in equal measure to what it gives. A haunting, twisty, and compulsively readable thrill ride from the author who Chris Bohjalian has dubbed the "literary descendant of Shirley Jackson," The Drowning Kind is a modern-day ghost story that illuminates how the past, though sometimes forgotten, is never really far behind us."--… (mehr)

Nicely creepy. A very classic horror story that teaches the “be careful what you wish for “ lesson. ( )

3.5 stars - Great book! It had just the right amount of creepiness, without going into full-on horror. Loved the ending as well! The subtly around the 'agoraphobia' was brilliant, and the manic sister and father really tied it together.

Some things I think could be improved on:
- The cover - are there even any flowers in the book? A better cover would be a water droplet, water splashing, or even a scene where you're looking out a door with a pool in the background, and a forest and two trees. Or even a peacock.
- It's weird that she calls her dad Ted.
- The plot holes.- how did she drown, if her father pulled her out of the pool? I assume she drowned sometime later, but it should probably be stated somewhere. Completely disjointed ending, but a great one. Would have been better if it tied together better though.
- The family-tree was a bit confusing. I could never remember what Gram's name was, and kept thinking she was Maggie. ( )

I really like this writers style! Her characters are lovable and suspicious at the same time and the way her plots unravel are just great.
The story dragged a bit towards the end of the first half, but then it picked up and didn’t stop. ( )

I thought overall this was a good psychological thriller. It involved the magical spring that had been in the family. Told from two different point of views and time lines. In 1929, a desperate woman takes a trip to the the springs with her husband after a grand hotel was built near the springs. She was infertile and wished desperately to have a child. She drank the water and the child was born but was premature and would not live long. Giving the newborn the spring water was a miracle. Circa 2019, a sister drowned into the pool that was their home. Is the spring pool cursed or is it a miracle? That is what you need to find out? ( )

The Drowning Kind is not normally a book I would have continued to read due to the supernatural elements, but it was very engaging. Jacqueline returns to her childhood home when she learns of her sister's unexpected death. She carries with her the grief that she has been estranged from her bi-polar sister, Lexie, for a long time. She also carried resentment that Lexie was seemingly the favored child. Lexie's death leaves her with grief and regrets.

She encounters strange occurrences surrounding the spring-fed pool in the backyard of their childhood home. The story weaves the past and the present in an intriguing timeline with the pool at the center in both past and present. The atmosphere of the novel is both spooky and frightening. ( )

For everyone out there who has the good sense to be a little afraid when swimming in deep, dark water. You tell yourself there's nothing down there, but there is. There always is.
