As all Covid things have now been considered done and over this book is more of a reminder, then I hope to get through. It would also be great for the next pandemic, when we are once again locked behind doors. This book stays to the hopeful and the exciting but mentioned that you don’t always get what you want or have what you need but you still had the world. ( ) This book tells the story of a time when there was a virus threatening people all over the world. The child in the story learns that handwashing, wearing masks, and social distancing were some of the ways to keep safe. Most of all, doing these things were part of being a Super Helper, and that is a wonderful thing! The illustrations by Yōko Matsuoka are simple, colorful, and meaningful. Loved it! Well suited for reading WITH someone of any age including ESL, and great for gifting to anyone, but especially to a school or your public library! I requested and received a free temporary e-book on Adobe Digital Editions from Independent Publishers Group/Huqua Press via NetGalley. Thank you! I wanted to like it and I wanted to give it a good review. To be completely honest, I'm ambivalent about this book. Not because it's poorly written or because the artwork stinks....No, it's because of the subject matter! I HATE the situation that made this book necessary to write. Now with that truth admitted and shared, I can finally come to terms with why I struggled and waited too long to write this review. It's a nice book for children who have been stuck in their house away from extended family and their friends, maybe their schools, activities, etc. The area I live in has not experienced near the extent that I know some have, and we are blessed. I cannot imagine kids who are still not returned to full time in person school or seeing relatives, for example. This book would be a positive statement to those children still living a quarantined, isolated, pandemic-related life. The message is nice, and the illustrations are well done. One creative critiscm is the typeset used in this book. I assume this is probably a self-published book, and the typeset makes it look that way. I think just a standard serif or sans serif type would have given it more of a professional feeling. Diese Rezension wurde für LibraryThing Early Reviewers geschrieben. This is a nice story with cute illustrations about the hard times we spent in our homes. It is a positive view on the lock-down. It recognizes the difficulties that stayed at home brought, but it also praises the imagination and energy we all put on to make things better, and be super-helpers.I received this copy in an Early Reviewers Giveaway in LibraryThing. I have to say that I've avoided sending it to my nephews for a while, and I think it's because I'm just sad about how true this book is. I usually like to send my nephews books that are cute, or funny, or happy. This book is, honestly, not quite the happiest book. But maybe they'll recognize some parts of their lives in here and maybe that'll help them out a bit. keine Rezensionen | Rezension hinzufügen

"With whimsical illustrations and relatable prose, When We Stayed Home is a reminder of how young children navigated big feelings and cheered themselves on during the upheaval of the Covid-19 pandemic. Honoring their role as "super helpers" they made sure to wash their hands, wear masks, social distance, and stay home. With the family dog as a trusty sidekick, the super-helper in When We Stayed Home builds virus-free forts, decorates toilet paper-shaped cookies, enjoys screen visits and dance parties with family and friends, and relies on resourcefulness, creativity, and imagination to weather the virus storm. Young children will recognize their own experiences and emotions as they see another child paint endless pictures and draw chalk art, read books and do puzzles, wave "hello" to masked neighbors, play under a bluer-than-usual sky, and feel all the feelings as they miss school, playgrounds, and friends and family while staying in their own houses. When We Stayed Home was inspired by Judy Proffer's resilient five year-old nephew, who continued to find moments of comfort and mirth in home, nature, adventures, and activities even while longing for the virus to go far, far away and by co-author and licensed family and marriage therapist Tara Fass's work with families to maneuver the bumpy road of the pandemic with tools, optimism, and hope. This gentle book serves as a time capsule for an uncertain time, celebrates the gifts of family, home, imagination and love, and honors the true heroes of covid" -- Keine Bibliotheksbeschreibungen gefunden. |
